We are all right here by your side, okay? We lived through the fear, the uncertainty , the hysteria, the disbelief, the crying ..... and so can you!

That painful leg will be gone and Hooch will be so happy to jave his quality, pain free life back! Sure, recovery is no picnic. It took me about three weeks before I could finally say I was doing this FOR my beloved Happy Hannah and not TO her!!

TW, you'll be strong enough to do this because your love for Hooch is strong enough to overcome any challenges! On top of that, Hooch's resilience will astound you! He doesn't feel sorry for himself at all! He's just glad to be rid of that bum leg and soak up all that nonstop loving and spoiling he'll be getting!

I do feel sorry for the squirrels though. It's not gonna be pretty!

Don't hesitate to call the Tripawds Helpline for support. All this can be so overwhelming and we are here to help. 1 844 TRIPAWDS

Thank you so much for your support!! I truly don't know how I would be right now without finding this place! I feel calm yet terrified. If that makes any sense.

Dropped my boy off today at the veterinary hospital 2 1/2 hours away. He was so excited to go! I was not.. Not knowing where or why he was going.. Just that he was going for a ride. He had to get blood work and an X-ray before his surgery tomorrow. Blood work came back very good. Xray they are uncertain of. They see something, think it's just a blood vessel, but aren't 100 percent sure. Offered a couple options... CT scan or go through with amputation and redo xray in a months time. I asked if it has spread to his lungs, what would be the treatment. She said there would be nothing they could do, as chemo doesn't help with this type of cancer? After thinking and thinking.. And thinking.. We decided to just proceed with surgery. (His lump biopsy isn't healing and it ruptured in another spot.) so we need to get rid of that lump! And we will deal with the rest later. One thing at a time. I said to her that I know my boy is an old man and things are gonna start to go but it's not time yet. For him or me. She replied, if he was hers she would've made the same decision.

So here I sit at home without him. Hoping and praying things will go good tomorrow.

Lynn and my beautiful boy Hooch.

Oh Lynn! You must be so exhausted, emotionally and physically!

I'm glad the vet gave you reassurance avout the amputation. The painful leg is the immediate concern. Anything else can be put on the back burner for now, okay?

Let's just get the surgery dong, get him home and get the recovery started! And there ARE treatment pla s ro pursue IF...big IF...there is a met. I can tell you this, often we see here where some sort of "spot" or "whatever" shows up in an xray and it ends up being jist an "older dog hazey spot".

As we've already mentioned, recovery is no picnic for a bit. Although there is surgery pain, so e say it's not as bad as the pain from the bum leg.

So he's spending tonight and tomorrow night? Try and get some rest! You may hzve a few sleepless nights when he first comes ho e. Tomorrow he'll be high as a kite and seeing pink elephants!

Deep breaths....chocolate....and KNOW that Hooch WANTS this chance at quality!! He is a very lpved boy and could not have better a better advocate!

Stay connected and update us as soon as he is out of surgery.

Sending extra hugs and love!

Ohhh I remember that feeling so well on our surgery day. For me it was guilt, because I knew what was coming and Jerry didn't.

If you feel the same way that's OK because you know what? You are giving him a gift of being pain free and happy on three. Wait till you see him bounce back, you will know you made the best decision for him.

One step at a time. You will put recovery behind you before you know it. Hang tight and keep us posted.

Hi Lynn, hope you and Hooch are doing well <3

I know how hard this day is for you, but it helps to keep in mind that you are definitely doing the right thing and that he will still love you the same. I learned that this is definitely something that is harder for us than it is for them. In fact, I had a very similar experience to yours. Same age, diagnosis, same problem with he biopsy not healing.. and let me tell you, I spent so much time and money trying to save the leg (about 6-7 months visiting the vet 1-3 times a week!) and now I realize that if I had done it sooner he wouldn't have had such a hard time (he absolutely will not go into the vet anymore and he used to love itcrying)

Once the amputation was done I felt a little silly because although it was so hard on me, he barely even noticed it was gone. He adapted to life so quickly and not even a week after surgery he wanted to be outside running around with his sister! Of course I didn't let him, but that's how good he felt, it was very surprising to me!

Almost a year later, he absolutely does not notice its gone and he probably loves his life better because of how much more spoiled he is now!rasberry

He's ok!!! The surgery went very well! I was a nervous, emotional wreck all day..

Can pick him up tomorrow afternoon. I know there is still so much ahead for us, but I can not believe some of the relief I feel that the surgery went good. That was soooo scary. Been working on getting everything ready for him.

Thank you so much Astrella91! I find it all the more comforting to hear a story that is similar to ours. Means a lot to hear from you.

Thank you all for being so supportive. I am forever grateful.

YAAAAAAAAAY FOR HOPCH!! Surgery is over and the pink elephants are out in full force!!

I remember the tears kf jiy and relief I jad when the Surgeon came out to tell me l the surgery was over and she had done well. When I took her in that morning I stayed in the waiting room with my little 14 yr. old dog and her vuddy the entire time and was not going to leave until I could see her! It took until 8:30 that night, but I got to go in and see her with her vuddy! She was completely zonked out and gently covered with her blankie.

I was soooo relieved!!! I didn't even peak under the covers to see the incision! And when Inpocked her up the next day and she came hopping out wagging and squealing with joy, I looked straight I to her druggy, happy eyes and kissed her mug, applauded her, and told her what a good girl she was! She never looked at her incision, so why should I!

Sleep well tonight....you may not get much sleep for a few nights!!

We're here for you!

Hugs!

Hooray!  Great news that the surgery went well.  Now get a good night's sleep yourself.  And yes, three legged dogs can chase squirrels and cats, and run outside, and sleep in the sun, and beg for your sandwich, and steal food off the counter, and take walks - just not so long.  smiley

Yaaay! Now you can breathe a little and know that everything's gonna be OK. He'll be home before you know it. Don't forget to come up with a list of questions for the vet before you pick him up, it will put your mind at ease to have answers before you leave. Best wishes & keep us posted!

My boy is home! And I couldn't be more happy.

We (my fiancé and I) picked him up at 4 yesterday afternoon. Went through all of his aftercare instructions with the nurse before we got to see him. I was so nervous!!! She told us he was doing amazingly well, which eased my mind. But when I saw him..... All I could think was my poor baby, and was this a good idea?!?? Couldn't even think straight.. And I was the one driving!  So we switched places. I was then able to turn around and look at him, talk to him, pet him and hold him all the way home.. 2 1/2 hour drive. Way better...

Once home, and out of the car, he had a pee, met with our other boy (Buddy) and tried to chase the cat! Got him into the house and on his new bed (mattress topper- twin size-memory foam (idea from here) and he's been doing wonderfully ever since! Up on his own, resting comfortably, eating a bit, drinking lots. Hops through the kitchen to the door (slowly) just needs help down the 3 stairs by the door. My fiancé carries him down. 80lbs! Hoping he'll be able to eventually do them on his own.

He does want to lay on the side that his surgery is on.. So I just left him that way. Going to call the vet today and just make sure this is ok.

Again, want to say thank you to all of you for your amazing support. Don't think I could've made the decisions I've had to make these last couple weeks without all the information, kind words.. And support!

I wouldn't worry about which side he rests on as long as the incision and staples look good.   Sometimes Otis was on the surgery side, sometimes not.    Otis was able to (slowly) move around and adjust his weight - usually by standing up and then laying back down.   Glad all is going well!

Yeah for Hooch!  He will eventually be able to do those 3 steps with no trouble at all.  As good as he's doing right now, don't be surprised if he "crashes" in a day or two, many do.  Right now he still has some of the anesthetics in his system from surgery.  So don't freak out.  What did they send you home with for pain?  Make sure that you're giving it around the clock.

Whooooohhhhoooo! Here's to a relaxing, uneventful recovery weekend, you're doing great!

If he's laying on his amp side already that is GREAT, it means he's feeling really good and not in pain. But yeah, as Donna said, be regular about the medication to keep him that way.

Let us know if we can help with anything.
