For the brainiacs out there....what is the best way to avoid ACL injuries or tears?
My question specifically is for high jumping, cat-like features, agility-type young dogs? But since we have had several young pups come on board as tripawds, does anyone know how to avoid it happening? All I know is how to "fix" it. And now that I have a 4 legged high jumper, I'm concerned it will happen in the future (concerned isn't the right word...it's more like "terrified").
I know a few things:
- Keep weight low. (not an issue here)
- Warm up the muscles before letting them catch frisbees, balls and such.
That's all I got! Anyone else?

Hey Cometdog, hope you don't mind I moved your post here...
I believe our friends at California Animal Rehab would say:
- regular exercise is good...avoid "weekend warrior" syndrome. This is when a dog who sits on the couch all day goes out only on weekends to play hard.
- avoid "explosive" exercise like sudden hard jumps and running without warming up
- don't allow regular jumping off furniture, into and out of cars and trucks, etc.
- keep games low and slow, avoid the high jump routine
- regular massage and stretching is helpful (see a prof. rehab therapist for how-to)

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Thanks Rene for the info!
...........I'm doomed. I better start saving now for his inevitable surgery!
He jumped on the desk the other day from 2 feet away...like a spring going b-o-i-n-g and landed on all fours flat! And he walks on the backs of the couches which means he jumps from the floor to the back of it. And now when he plays frisbee, he does twisties in air!
Do they make weighted booties?
Doooooomed. Doooomed. Doooomed.

Take a chill pill mommy! I love you, but take a chill pill!
I was born to FLY, FLY, FLY!
And if you'd learn to shoot a good picture, I could show all my monkeydog friends! So, instead of worrying about my legs, take a camera class!
P.S. I love you mommy! (and I can see your grey roots from up above! Bwhahahhahaha!)
Never too late to be safe! Just watch out for the flying monkeybutts, they're the REAL hazard!

I think it's cuz the little white guy is short on brains that he can get so high in the air. I've heard that brains weigh quite a bit, but if his are all white and fluffy like his butt, of course he can fly!

PS: Angel Comet's momma, they do make weighted booties! Maybe us TGP Princesses could pitch in and get him some, and then you could take him swimming!

I would chip in for those!
TGP furever!
