Well, finally after waiting for new parts to arrive, and then procrastinating (one of my home habits - unfortunately) we have the wagon together and ready to service.

So, you ask, why would I need suggestions?  Well, I put one side back so there would be a flat surface, covered the bottom with a folded doggied blanket, grabbed the juju ball and another ball toy and scooched it up next to the bed, thinking I would entice some curiocity.  No luck!  Trouble is not remotely intereted.  Will not even go take a look.  Duke looked but not overly excited either.  I tried sitting on it, laying into it from the bed - so far still no interest.  I'm thinking of adding treats.

Maybe I'll take it outside with us and pull it around?  If I can get Duke into it, Trouble will do it too, just so he won't be having all the fun!  She's that way, ya know.

oh, that is interesting.  I thought of doing this very thing for my mastiff.  I wanted to see him pulling the wagon around with the yard waste and rocks, while I did yard work.

Is this the type of wagon you are talking about?  If so, I would say that "Cali", the husky, would be great at this kind of training.  There are video's of beginning training for this on-line, but it has been a while since I tried to teach this, so I can't remember where to pull it up.

I hope this helps,

Elizabeth,

This is a kids wagon (little tykes) for Trouble to ride in so she can go on longer walks with me.  Although, I could probably train Duke to pull it, that could be intereting.  He's strong as an ox and pretty easy to train.

We remember Jackie telling how they introduced Shelby to her red wagon by taking the wheels off and keeping her toys in it inside until she became comfortable approaching it. Then they added the wheels, then they started teasing her into it with treats.

Good Luck! Can't wait to see pictures of Duke towing Trouble down the trail. cool

I had this same problem with Kona and her red Radio Flyer wagon.  She does not think she is "disabled" and wants to jump out all of the time so I cross-tie her in there with 2 leashes so she can sit up or lie down but can't stand and jump.  Every so often I hoist her out and let her walk and sniff with the other dogs.  It is quite an ordeal and the people at the dog park think I am nuts but the little princess gets to have her fun!  I should take her out more often but it requires my husband's help so we maybe do it once a month or so.

I'd give it time, at least she's not freaked out by it.

Have you tried smearing the edges with peanut butter? No, really! It might work. Messy, but ya never know.

Good luck!

Trouble aint going for any convertable rides?

I bought a cool red wagon with side rails many years ago for Comet.  Guess where it sits?  The garage.

But I did get the same stroller that Karen has for Maggie - the green mesh one. She'll jump in and ride.  She likes to stand, bark and push to try to get out which bugs me. Why she jumps in it, I'll never know since she seems to hate it.  We went this morning in it and she had a fit the whole time but she wouldn't get out when we opened the door.

I got no suggestions other than using the wagon for hauling top soil in a bag to the back yard which is what I use mine for!

It would have to be cream cheese - she's allergic ya' know!  I've moved it to another spot in the bedroom, thinking I may try some treats in it when I get home this evening.  Of course, chow hound Duke, will be the one who finds them!  I'm thinking I will take it outside with her and leave him in the house.  Put treats in it and pull it around, call her to it and give her a treat, and let her work around to getting the treat from it herself.  Baby steps.

Not ready to give up and add it to the garage collection yet.  Last resort is to give it to my niece's kids.

I recently bought the DoggyRide stroller with bike attachment as wel,l for Maggie.  But at the present time, my Aussie likes it better(she's crate queer anyways 🙂  Haley has a shoulder injury right now, so this is her mode of transportation for walks.  I clicker train my dogs, so shaping games now include getting into the Doggyride.  With the sunroof it's easy to treat while moving, which I did on earlier walks with Haley.  She LOVES it and gets out but hops right back in 🙂

As I said, I originally bought this for Maggie - but Maggie doesn't seem to think she's disabled and kinda protests being in it....plus, it's really too small for Mags...she takes up the ENTIRE floor space.  Would be nice if it was a tad bigger for her.  I suspect I'll be using it more for Haley right now vs. Maggie.

Patience will go a long way. My pawrents tried to introduce me to a wagon in a hurry (duuuuuuuhhh Mom!)  which totally freaked me out and I never wanted to go in one again. Even riding in a golf cart made me nervous after that.

Hi Shanna,

The reason I got the type of stroller I did for Mag (enclosed) is that I though she would jump out of anything open.  I also wanted something that she could get in and out of by herself.  THIS is what I have.  But Mag was much smaller than Trouble and the stroller is only rated to 50 lbs.

When Mag was younger and still a quad I tried pulling her in a wagon but she would always jump out, so I was worried she would not like the stroller.  When I first got the stroller I took the carrier part off and put it on the ground.  I had her get in and out lots of times, and then get in and sit for awhile, and she got a treat each time.  Then I put the carrier back on the wheels and put her in, gave her a treat, and let her just sit in it with the door open (not moving).  After doing that for awhile I put her in and closed the door. After a few days of that I put her in, closed the door, and pushed it just a few feet- across the room.  She was fine with that at that point so I put her in and pushed her around in the house a couple times a day.  When her stitches came out we started going on short trips outside.  I got her used to getting in and out by herself (a little help in) and always let her out at some point on the trip.  While I was training her I always had the stroller in the house, and would move it around so she was used to the movement, and the noises it made.  Once she was used to it she LOVED it!

So I guess the bottom line is patience!

Also- Tani always wanted to get in because she saw Mag getting in, but she was scared when it moved so would want out.  That was good, and I encouraged her 'fear' because I wanted Tani to walk.  But once she road in it a few times (thanks Dad!) she figured out riding was better than walking!  That will come in handy as Tani ages and her arthritis gets worse.

How could I get Fortis into a wagon or stroller.............food food food! Sorry, but that's my only advice.

I hope Trouble is starting to take to her new little red wagon. You need to post a picture for all of us to see. Preferably one with the Duke pulling it. smile

Seriously, I hope you are making progress.

Food works really well for motivating Duke - Trouble not so much.

I haven't been real persistant about working with her, but I have a four day weekend coming up - that should help.

You are truly good people with lots of patience....as I'm reading this I'm thinking if I could have done it with Magic...nope.   I had considered getting a stroller for Casper the Friendly coneheaded whatever he thinks he is at the moment, but then was afraid if we met other dogs while walking, it might not be pretty.  So we leave on our walks and he sits in the window pouting and is still there when we come back, waiting.  This morning when we got home from getting Whiskey's staples out (gastropexy....on top of the complicated neutering back a few weeks ago...house arrest is becoming really old) little Casper was waiting to dash out...i did grab him by the tail, that'll teach him....NOT.

I cannot wait to see what happens.....I especially want to see Duke pulling Trouble...that will be worth publishing somewhere....
