Hello! My tripod is named Blueberry, a 9 year old blue heeler with a missing back leg. His one remaining hip has hip dysplasia and he has been on an anti-inflammatory (carprofen) ever since we discovered this 2 years ago. He has been a tripod since he was around 1 we were told. He has been doing great since the anti-inflammatories, but something tweaked the other day and his back end started dipping down very low and it seemed to be giving out. Then today he did a full on sprint and has not been able to walk since. Taking him in tomorrow for an xray.
Anyone else have experience with the hip dysplasia/tripod combo?
Hi Blueberry and family, welcome. Your future posts won't need to wait for approval so post away. I hope your visit went well today and you got some answers.
Yes, unfortunately many Tripawds have dealt with orthopedic conditions like hip dysplasia. Some require surgery, most do not and the condition is successfully managed with pain medication, weight control and careful monitoring of exercise. It really depends on the dog and their human's financial situation, what they can invest in managing it. The most important thing is to get the pain under control first, and then work with a rehab therapist to bring it down to a manageable level and learn how to minimize the impact.
Let us know what your vet says. Also, oftentimes a second opinion from an orthopedic surgeon is very helpful in a situation like this, as is one from a rehab therapist. And if you go to a rehab therapist, the Tripawds Foundation can pay for your first visit so don't forget OK?
Please let us know how things are going, we look forward to hearing back!
