Honey had her entire right rear leg amputated 6 weeks ago to remove the associated pain and cancer (osteosarcoma). Until one week ago she was doing fabulous; running, swimming, cruising around in the woods while I huckleberry picked. Then, during a weekend of camping, swimming and playing her right hip area where the leg was removed has become swollen. It appears to be annoying to her, but she is eating and doesn't seem to be in pain. Has anyone experienced this type of swelling this many weeks post-amputation?

Thanks for any help-

Toni for Honey

Hi Toni & Honey, welcome.

We're sorry to hear that she's having mobility issues. I would definitely have this swelling checked out by your vet. It's probably nothing to worry about but if she is having trouble getting around, then my bet is that she is definitely in pain. Dogs have a great way of disguising pain and we usually don't notice the indicators until it's terribly painful for them. See this post for details:

You also might want to check out our e-book, Loving Life On Three Legs . It's all about staying injury-free and fit on three. As much as our dogs bounce back soon after surgery, we can do so many things to keep them from hurting themselves. It's a learning curve but it definitely pays off. Also check out the Tripawds Gear blog for lots of mobility tips too.

Let us know what your vet says. And please consider registering so your posts won't always need approval.

Just want to send some healing energynto Honey! It's good that she's eating and feeling pretty darn good overalll. The swelling could me so manymjnor things that maybe a dose of steroids and a bit of rest could help. Heck, could even be some sort of bite she got while roaming around in the woods that caused a vit of infection and a dose of antibiotics could help that.

Please update after you get her checked out. Would love to hear more aout Honey. She sounds like quite a spunky girl!!

Hugs!
