For those of you not familiar with greyhounds, they wear muzzles when they are turned out at the racing kennels. These muzzles are to allow some protection if pack fights should break out and when a poop cup is added, it deters them from eating poo - YUCK!
Some greyhounds figure out how to get these muzzles off & Calamity was one of them who refused to wear her muzzle in the race kennel. Her trainer would get so frustrated with her for taking it off every time she was turned out. She would stand in the middle of the pen and raise a leg behind her ear & slide it right off. She continued to do the same thing here on the occasions I make her wear a muzzle.
Since it's cold, the poop eating gets crazy, as does the dirt eating, so my dogs go out with muzzles now, Calamity included. I always laugh at her when I put hers on telling her, "a tripawd can't get the muzzle off" and out she goes with her lilac muzzle I bought for her when she was still racing.
Well, tonight she comes back in WITHOUT her muzzle!!! I'm serious!! Apparently, she figured out that if she lays down, she can get the muzzle off with her remaining front leg.
She's one smart cookie!!!

Ha! She showed you, Mom. Silly human!
Thanks for the education, we had no idea that's why greys wear muzzles so often. Silly dogs.

Got to love those sighthounds - they are such "thinkers" LOL.
I would have never said Calamity was the smart one in my pack, that's Kade.

Something else: you said that poo & dirt eating gets crazy now that it's cold - please explain! Recently, I've noticed that Piper and Rudd come in with bad smells on their breath, and have wondered if there's any horse manure left round the garden... it's only happened since it got cold.
What a hoot! Doesn't your heart just SING when they figure out how to do some of their old tricks that you thought they would never be able to do again since becoming a tripawd?
Zeus always loved to chase his tail and I didn't think he would be able to do it with just 3 legs...boy was I wrong! It always brings such a huge smile when I see him do it now...

I know what you mean - even things you didn't want them to do are a delight now! I thought Bonnie would no longer be able to scrape the blanket off our bed so that she could lie on our pillows, coating them in hair.... I was wrong, and nearly cried with joy when I saw the mess she'd made of our bed yesterday!

I don't think anyone knows why poop eating gets so bad in the cold weather, I just know it does! When I worked in the greyhound kennels, we'd add poop cups to almost all of the dogs muzzles in the winter. Sometimes that didn't stop them from trying & they would still come in with poo all over theri muzzles...YUCK!
If yours come inside with smelly breath after being out, my guess is they have been snacking.
I never feel bad putting a muzzle on a greyhound, they grew up with them & are so used to them it's like second nature!
I was going to post a photo of our muzzle rack, but this new forum won't let me copy/paste a photo *grumble*

Thanks for your answer. I've never seen any of our greys eat dog poo - they're all partial to horse manure and rabbit droppings - but I might just muzzle them before letting them out now. You're quite right, they're all used to muzzles (although Monty hates it and just goes around whacking everything with the muzzle).
Did you work in a rehoming kennel or a racing kennel? My daughters both have a weekend job in a racing kennel, which is how we got two of ours. It's nice, because we know their history; with Rudd (the youngest, 2 years) we even know his mum & dad, all the siblings, some aunties & uncles...
Clever Calamity!
Darcy did a great trick this week. She'd gone out to the garden with some of the others and I'd closed the sliding door because it was minus 4 outside! I was typing away on the computer and I heard a dog tapping on the door to be let back in. I glanced over to see who it was, assumed (in the darkness) that it was Duffy, our male Deerhound, opened the door and in ran Darcy! We puzzled for ages about how a dog with one front leg taps on the door - was it with her teeth?! Her back legs?! Her nose? (No, thats too soft to make a tapping noise). As it turns out, Darcy jumps up and hits the door with her remaining front leg to make the tapping noise!!
Darcy – tripawd since 16th October 2007.
***Darcy would love to be your friend on Facebook - just search for Darcy Deerhound***
Hmmmm...maybe it was Darcy's phantom limb doing the tapping? 😉
What a cute story, thanks for sharing.

My greys will eat any poop, they really love the parrots poop if they can beat me to it! I have a friend who's greys love rabbit droppings!
I have worked in both type kennels on the race track that was running here in Kansas City.
I was the director of adoptions until the track closed in August. Our adoption kennel was housed on the track compound so I always knew many of the racers before they retired to the adoption kennel!
That is how I met Calamity, she was in a race kennel that is visited often. Kade also.
I had a lady & her mother visit with me from England! They came in one day & did all of the work & player with the adoption kids. Her & her husband race greys in England & adopt out all of their own.
