Hi my 8 year old chocolate lab had his right front leg amputated on May 11th. He was doing great until 2 days ago, I noticed he was licking his left foot and saw that the pads were irritated and red. Tried putting on a boot but he was not having it, have been putting mushers secret paw protection cream on the area its helping a little. Anyone have any suggestions.
Hi Judy! Your future posts won't need approval so post away. What's your doggies name? Why the amputation?
Pressure sores on a Tripawd's pad are not uncommon, but they need to be addressed as you know. Oftentimes a pressure sore can indicate imbalances in his gait that are causing him to walk even more unique than a Tripawd already does. In the long term, what can help prevent them is to work with a rehab therapist to help him get strong and stay strong. These visits are so valuable and the best part is Tripawds Foundation can pay for your first rehab visit .
Meanwhile, about the short term issue of dealing with it...my best suggestion is to send an image to your vet asap, just so that you know you aren't dealing with anything else but a pressure sore. And when your vet looks at it, s/he can prescribe an ointment to help with healing. I would suggest manuka honey but you DO have a Lab who might love the taste lol! Keeping it covered and protected will be tough. Some people use a DIY bootie that many dogs will tolerate, provided they are given lots of yummy treats when you put it on! And here's a post about introducing your dog to boots.
Let us know what works for you!
