Hello!!  I am new to this site and am looking for some direction.  I found an approximate 8 week old cattle dog 3 months ago in a field across from my farm.  The puppy had 2 bilateral open fractured to both back legs.   It appears she was run over but am not sure.  The lt side was amputated at the hip and WAS healed good.  Her rt leg had been in a cast for over 2 months but is now in a splint.  I have been trying to use a sling to help get her walking but it has been very difficult.  The poor baby hasn’t had any use of her back legs for so long now.   She shows no interest in wanting to walk and has now developed a pressure wound on the amputated stump and is being treated for same. I put her in a sling daily and she hates it.  Could someone please offer some guidance/advice/help/encouragement on how to get her walking again.  Thanks so much in advance.

OH my gosh she is so lucky to have landed near your farm, you are such a saint for helping her, thank you! Yes, she can get to being an active dog again, I have no doubt. Heelers are such strong little go-getters!

My best advice is to get her to a canine rehabilitation therapist asap. She is likely dealing with a lot of issues related to the accident, and a therapist is the best person to evaluate her situation right now. The best part is, the Tripawds Foundation may even pay for your first rehab visit so click the link for details. And if you'd like help finding a clinic near you please let us know, we are happy to assist.

In the meantime, I would recommend a harness like the Pet Support Suit or Get-a-Grip or Ruffwear Webmaster so that you can aid her in getting around.

Geez, what a back story.  So glad you foj d rhis sweet dog.  Don't  even want to think what would happen had you not.  She must have been in such pain and so scared.

Ditto Jerry's advice on get a Rehab Specialist  to work with her mas soon as possible.

Is she on any pain meds or anti inflammatories?  What is the Vet doing as far as the sore on her stump?  Is it protected  in anyway?

Also, can you massage up and down gently  around her spine and neck and shoulder?  Does she show any tension?  My guess is her muscles  are very tight.

Do you have  Rehab Specialist in your area?  As long as there isn't  any other damage still to be figured out, the therapy can do wonders. Your poor girl has been through a lot, all while her little muscles and bones are starting to grow and form.

Please keep us informed and let us know how she is doing.
