Hi All! We are new to the blog! Piper was adopted November 2016 4 days post amputation (she was our foster for 2 weeks, then we finalized adoption right after) She was about 5-6 months when she had her rear left leg amputated due to an old injury. She has always gotten around great until 2 weeks ago. She stumbled going up our stairs and dislocated her patella. She didnt have any immediate pain, just abnormal gait - so we rested her for 2 days then saw our vet. She was on bed rest, rimadyl, tramadol, and cold laser therapy for the past 10days.  Occasionally the knee still pops out, but she just stretches and moves around till it is back working. We are trying to avoid surgery if possible and looking for recommendations for other treatments for her.

Thanks in advance - and we are glad to have stumbled upon this website!

Ouch! A dislocated patella would sure hurt me. Poor Piper! Dogs are so stoic.

Thanks for joining, we're glad you found us too. She's adorable.

Have you seen an orthopedic veterinarian yet?

Are you working with a canine rehab therapist on this issue?  Taking a conservative approach to surgery is great, but the guidance of a rehab therapist will ensure that the approach is successful. That's my biggest suggestion for you. The good news is that the Tripawds Foundation may even pay for your first rehab visit , that's how strongly we feel that rehab can help a Tripawd no matter what physical challenges they're dealing with.

Your vet should be able to make a referral to a therapist, but if you'd like help finding one let us know and we'll try to point you in the right direction.
