Hi,
I joined back in Jan. right after we adopted a 3 month old 3 legged toy poodle. He is now almost 10 months old (and still 3 legged!). He was inbred and born without a front left leg. We walk our dogs 4 times a day and recently Cheek doesn't want to go. In fact, he just flops down on the sidewalk and won't budge! I am guessing this is more behavioral than physical. He used to love going for walks because that meant attacking our other dog's ears OR grabbing every piece of grass in sight. The stricter we became with the "rules" of walking, the less he wanted to go. He will go longer if we are in a new place. However, our neighborhood seems to bore him to death now and he flops down as soon as we get to the sidewalk.
It has gotten hotter and he has gotten bigger as well. I am wondering if it is physically harder for him to walk now that he has grown. I am not expecting too much for him to go on a short walk, right? I "think" his lack of interest in the walk is behavioral, but I certainly don't know for sure. Does anyone have any experience like this or any advice?
thanks,
Sherri
How short is short? Is he showing any signs of pain or discomfort? What breed/size are the other dogs? It does sound behavioral, but you don't want to push him physically either. He works a lot harder than his four legged pack mates.

Throwing himself on the ground could pawsibly be his way of telling you that he is exhausted. Four times a day sounds like a lot of walking for the little guy. How far and how long are you walking? At less than a year old he still shouldn't be walking more than a mile a day, even as a four legger.
When I was a puppy, I used to do the same thing. I had four legs then, but the behavior was identical. My Mom and Dad were just walking me too far. Once the realized this and we scaled back the walks, I got stronger and stronger. Eventually I was able to go on long hikes with them, but not until I was over a year old.
A dog's size usually has very little to do with how he handles life as a Tripawd. Even a 165 pound pup will do fine physically and remain strong, as long as he is getting the right amount of exercise and isn't overweight. It's a fine line to walk (pun intentded!), but I would definitely think that the throwing himself down is a sign that he is tired.
For some tips about exercising your Tripawd without getting them exhausted or damaging their health, check out these posts from CARE Rehabilitation in Los Angeles. And then be sure to join us this Saturday 7/10 in the chat to ask Dr. Waldman your physical therapy and rehabilitation questions. See you there!

Cheek is a 10 lb toy poodle. He doesn't even start the walk so that is why I thought it was more behavioral than physical. We live in a 4th floor apt. I carry him down to the street. He takes a couple of steps and plops down. Today I took them to a grassy pond area and he was up and running because he wanted to chase the other dogs and eat grass! Once we got back onto the trail he plopped down. Just proper walking with no purpose (no fun for him) he doesn't seem to like.
thanks,
Sherri
Just curious ... does Cheek get carried around a lot, whenever you go out? If so that could be the reason for him not wanting to go on walks.

Well, Cheek had a nose to tail exam today with X-rays. It seems he has mild (stage 1) hip dysplasia in his rear hips. Now this is a problem given that he only has one front leg! My vet thinks he didn't want to walk because of pain from his hips. He was inbred and we knew when we adopted him that he could have additional health problems. However, I wasn't expecting hip dysplasia at 10 months old!
Sounds like Cheek could greatly benefit from hydrotherapy and frequent dog massage. He should also get a good hip and joint supplement. At least you know now what was making him refuse to walk, and that he isn't up for strenuous exercise. Search these forums and Jerry's blog and you will find lots of tips and videos about how healthy swimming is for dogs with hip issues. Just ask Chuy!
Thnaks for the update!

Aww Cheek, I"m so sorry. But you know what? I had hip displaysia too, and was diagnosed before I got cancer. I did fine as a Tripawd. My recommendation is to see a canine rehabilitation specialist, and find out how therapy and proper care can improve your strength. Lots of dogs live happy healthy lives with hip displaysia and so will you! Good luck!

When I got Charlie eight and a half years ago, they actually had two dogs. Charlie, the large yellow lab with allergies and Kona, a German Shepherd with severe hip dysplasia. They were going to put both down. Being a cat person, I had no knowledge of dog issues, but I took Charlie, thinking Kona was destined to a horrible future (that is what was relayed to me). Had I known then what I know now, I would have saved Kona too.
Not a death sentence yet one has to be prepared for the care of an animal. I probably wasn't prepared at the time, but Charlie, being the most expensive, issue laden, dog, ever, has prepared me, now.
Long post, short point = Hip dysplasia can be but a bump in the road.

Hi Sherri!
You contacted me thru YouTube and told me Cheek had FHO surgery on his left rear leg. Please keep us posted on his progress.
As for walking him, Chuy can only go about 2 blocks and that is every other day. Even after his FHO surgery the walks cannot be any longer than that.
Cheek is a cutie!

Chuy, showing everyone that Tripawds do everything 3 times better than regular dogs!
Poor Cheeky! Is he on any NSAIDs for his hip dysplasia? How's he doing now?
Angel Jake and Wolfie's Mom
Jake, 10yr old golden retriever (fractured his front right leg on 9/1, bone biopsy revealed osteosarcoma on 9/10, amputation on 9/17) and his family Marguerite, Jacques and Wolfie, 5yr old german shepherd and the newest addition to the family, Nala, a 7mth old Bengal mix kittie. Jake lost his battle on 11/9/2009, almost 8 weeks after his surgery. We will never forget our sweet golden angel… http://jakesjou.....ipawds.com ….. CANCER SUCKS!
Sorry, I haven't been checking in with this site much. I have been spending all my time learning about hip dysplasia! On Friday Cheek had FHO surgery: femoral head ostectomy. He is now a bit of a bipawd! He has a special harness with a long handle that I use to support him for his toilet business. The leg he is missing and the leg that was operated on are on the same side. He will be 11 months later in August and we hope his young age will help him bounce back quickly. That, and the 4 times a day rehabilitation regime we are doing.a
One interesting thing came out of the surgery. The surgeon and my vet both x-rayed him head to tail. When he was surrendered to the shelter at 2 months old the staff was told that he was inbred and born without a front leg (he has a tiny stump). However, both vets agree that he was born with 4 legs. There is a piece of elbow in the xray. They believe the mother dog (or father) probably chewed it off. Either that or a human removed it but we can't imagine why.
thanks.
Sherri
Hey Sherri glad to hear that Cheek came through surgery! Keep us posted.
