Oscar has a pressure sore on his elbow on his "good" side. He had a right hind leg amputation.

Any advice? I saw a product called dog leggs which is like a bandage that goes over both front legs, joined over the back and chest.

I'm just freaked in case anything happens to Oscar's 3 remaining legs!

Hi Boskie, welcome! How did Oscar lose his leg? What kind of dog is he? We're so glad you found us, thanks for joining. Your future posts won't require moderation.

Yes, DogLeggs is a terrific solution for hygromas (pressure sores).  You want to do all you can to avoid them, they can get really icky. We've talked a lot about them here, as these Forum posts show.

You  might also want to try making your own elbow protector. These plans from Tripawds member etGayle can show you how.

He disclocated his hip on 17 June. He managed to get the bandage off so we were advised to crate him

The night we crated him there was a storm and he basically gnawed his own paw (which had a small wound on it) down to the bone out of anxiety. It was truly a horrible experience. I brought him to the vet every day to have the wound dressed but it was not healing and was getting worse so the decision was made last Friday to amputate the leg.

Because he's been lying mainly on one side since 17 June his left elbow has a pressure sore.

He's a almost 11 yr old fit Border Collie X

Welcome to you and Boskie. We didn't have any problems with pressure sores so I don't have any advice to share, but just wanted to say welcome to the site. I'm sorry you had to find us here, but you'll be glad you did. Lots of good info and support here.

It's so hard to not worry about those remaining legs, once they lose their "spare."

Hang in there and let us know how he's doing.

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

awwwww, poor guy! That had to have been awful for both of you, I'm so sorry!

His small size should be an advantage when it comes to getting rid of the pressure sores, which typically affect heavier, larger dogs. Good luck and let us know what works.

I am dealing with a pressure sore for my Bongo who had a front leg amputated 6 months ago.  It started out looking like a huge callous on his elbow but when the vet removed it there was a crater that went almost to the bone.  And it was infected.  And the infection was spreading to other parts of his leg.  He is on heavy duty antibiotics which appears to be helping.  Also - we are changing the wound bandage daily and putting a towel under the elbow to keep pressure off of it.  Take this very seriously as an infection can easily get out of hand and, as my vet warned me, he only has the one good leg up front - if that goes - well - you know the answer to that.  Yesterday, Bongo had his first laser treatment but I cannot yet report results.  There are special dressings you should use on these wounds that are specifically made for these pressure sores.  I'll have to find the box and post separately.  Good luck.

Sharon (and Bongo and Bailey - both happy Tripawds)

Here is a post from Elgin, a large Dogue de Bordeaux who successfully fought off his hygroma with a laser therapy treatment at his vet’s office:
