Barney and Yukon,

You guys are doing great! One hop at a time, you'll be there.

About the pain meds; my Mom gave me 1.5 tramadol to the correct dose of Metacam, for about 2 weeks after surgery. It seemed to help a lot. I'm sorry you're not sleeping well. Have you tried a heating pad at night?

Hi Jerry,

I was on Derramax and Tramadol, plus a Fentanyl patch when I came home from the hospital last Friday evening.  I was doing well managing the pain, then Mom took the Fentanyl patch off on Monday just like the doc said.  After that I was miserable - pacing, panting, walking in circles, not sleeping or letting anyone else sleep either.   Mom talked to the doc and took me off the Derramax for 36 hours and then I was able to have a dose of Metacam - it's heavenly!  I have been resting, then got up and wanted to play, even scared Mom to death when I jumped up on the sofa!  Hopefully I will also sleep well tonight and if not, Mom's going to try the heating pad as you suggest.  So for now, at least until the oncologist appointment next Thursday the 28th, I'll stay on the Metacam plus Tramadol - just like you did!  I'm also due to get my staples out that day and we'll all be happy about that.  Pray for a positive path forward from the oncologist for me -

Oh, I have a question - do we have to wait until staples are all out before Mom puts the Ruff Wear harness on me?

Barney,

You know my Dad thinks that maybe the Fentanyl patch, when it's removed, is kind of like when a smoker quits smoking and craves nicotine? Maybe it's a withdrawal problem? I dunno. No vets in this house. But we're glad that you're doing better.

You did not jump on the sofa? Did you?! Crazy!

The harness...yah, I'd wait. Might rub you the wrong way when you aren't ready for it. My Mom and Dad waited till my stitches were out (don't know why some vets use hardware and others use thread).

We are sending out lots of good wishes and healing thoughts! Please keep us posted. Good luck!

Sadie also sounds amazing and I hope our adjustment is as smooth.  We will let all Yukons new friends know tomorrow how he is doing.

Thanks for asking! Everyday does get better!  He has his spirit back, barking at things he hears outside etc.  He goes outside to do his business a few times a day and seems to know his own limits right now.  Stitches come out Friday.
