My Sheltie is around a month front leg amputation. Trying to get rehab but they don’t have appointments until beginning of April or May which I scheduled. Doing exercises at home and short walks. Even with short walks she loses her balance at times and catches self with nose which is getting scraped up. The walks are short but not sure if this is normal or we’re pushing her too fast. She doesn’t sit or lie down but will stop at times. Doesn’t seem to be is pain. In the house she plays with the other dog and in back yard will run short distances after birds.
Worried about balance issue and if that just improves with time along with the strength

Front leggers to tend to have "face plants" at first.  They need to build up their core strength, their tummy muscles.  Her balance will improveas she continues to adjust to her new gait.  And yes, Rehab will definitely  help.

What is her activity  level like as far as her "short" walks?  How far and how long?  If she sits down, she's already show she's over done it.  Slowing down and stopping  could mean she's getting tired.  Dogs love to stop and sniff though.

When you say doing exercises at home, are you talking  stretches, that type of thing??   Its such a bummer you can get a Rehab appt sooner.  I would try and get on a cancel list if you haven't already.  The home exercises are great, but can actually cause harm if not done properly.

Oops!  I probably asked more questions rather than giving you any answers.  Others will chime in.

BTW ,love the avatar  picture.

Hugs

Sally read my mind, what does a short walk look like?

Yes, we are doing stretching and some balance activities. The walks are a little past our cul-de-sac so not far. Trying to do more short walks. We are on cancel lists so hope someone calls. Seems most of the rehab people are very busy here.
Unfortunately we live in Phoenix so our yard is mostly gravel and on our walks only a few areas of grass. She does better at a fast pace walk but I think gets ahead of herself at times and stumbles.

Oh WHEW! Glad you are on the cancellation list. Hopefully they can squeeze you in. It does seem like everywhere around the country right now, rehab therapists are booked solid.

Tripawds normally walk faster than four-leggers, so that's not unusual. With some therapy and exercise, you should be able to help her get that stumbling under control. Till you see the practitioner, I would keep the walks as short as you can, under 10 minutes, just to be safe.
