Hi- wondering if anyone else has seen this with their older, less active tripawd dogs. Tucker is 10, and 7 mos out of amputation of his left front limb. He is a couch dog and has never been active. Slight arthritis in the other front leg. We take him on a walk around the block or 1/2 way round the park at least 1 x day. Some days he walks better than others. We do some leg stretches with him that we learned on this site, but he hates it, so it is not easy. What we have been seeing is that the remaining front leg muscles seem to almost be atrophying (spelling?) not building up. It seems weaker. And the muscles on his hips are tight as a drum- rock solid most of the time. We try massaging the back muscles a couple times a week, but they are just so tight. What is going on? We have a vet appt. at the end of the month. Any suggestions? Has anyone tried swimming? feel free to send me an email- I have trouble finding everyone's answers on this forum once I have posted. lyonkeepergirl@yahoo.com

Thanks for checking in, sorry to hear about Tucker's troubles. You might want to focus on more strengthening exercises and less walking.

Keep in mind that walking does not build muscle, only stamina. Stretches, range of motion exercises and massage are definitely beneficial too. Watch all our rehab vet interview videos for more tips and consult with a certified rehab vet for a professional evaluation if at all possible.
