Trixie wore her new support brace (the only one of 3 ordered that fit her) today.

She was stationary most of the time because she didn't like it. Even so, in less than 20 min a wound has appeared on her remaining front leg paw.

I can't really figure out how it got there.

(Photo's don't seem to be uploading correctly so I've linked a web page, the photo's are the top two)

Are you sure that was not already there?  Looks like pressure sore. If needed you can apply more padding such as an old sock around the area to reduce wear and apply a topical antibiotic ointment until healed.

Hmm I'll check the images tomorrow when I'm on my desktop.

20 minutes is a long time to introduce something like a brace. It's like introducing a dog harness.

Go much slower like maybe 5 minutes at a time to start and that should help her get used to it.

That would be great in a way if it was a pressure sore all along. I do like Dr Pam's suggestions for the anti friction stuff. Human amputees do that to get artificial limbs components from doing the same thing.

I had checked her paw a few times and had not seen that raw spot. I'm not really clear on what a pressure sore looks like (I could only find bed sores when doing an online search).

A second thought came to me that it may be linked to her morning meaty bone and her raw hide chewie's which she is not used to but absolutely loves. Perhaps she has licked and/or wounded that area while enjoying them?

It's not looking worse. She does lick it occasionally. I have a non-toxic paw-paw salve which does wonders for our tropical cuts, I might apply that when we have our movie-lap-time so she doesn't lick it off.

This is actually a pressure sore on Dr. Pam's angel dog, Tazzie:

Our Nellie has one too, because of her odd gait. It looks very similar to this.

Thanks, that looks a bit worse than Trixie's. I'll keep an eye on it but there wasn't a raw wound in my previous checks. In fact when we trimmed her nails I chose not cut the hair as a bit of a pad protector (when she gets her indoor room I'll have to trim the hair due to slip risk).

I'll keep an eye on it. The hard part is knowing how bad her remaining front leg wrist is and not bracing it - she's really on borrowed time with that mal-healed fracture. Her wheelchair should be here in about 3 weeks - that should help as she really does want to play!

Oh I'm glad the pic helped! And happy that hers isn't as bad.

Dr. Pam can give you vet-expert advice about protecting that front wrist from further abuse.

Very happy you got the wheels! Where did you end up getting them from?

When I was given Trixie she did not have pressure sores. But developed TWO within a few weeks. One on her remaining front paw and the other on the little nub of her amputation stub. So I looked around to see what she was doing differently.

1. Less time on the grass

2. More time on a cushioned sun lounger that has a very rough weather proof fabric

So I purchased several baby soft blankets (cheap washable ones) and now cover the lounger and their mattresses with these.

The weather is great so we spend a bit of time on the grass in the sun. Trixie loves to sun bathe when I am with her. This has helped dry out the little wounds and they appear to be healing.

P.s. the wheels haven't arrived yet but were ordered from Ruff Rollin' (I pray they arrive safely and fit her well.)

Hey I was just thinking about you two! Glad that her pressure sores are healing, and you figured out the cause. YAY! smiley_clap She should feel sooo much better now.

Keep us posted on the wheels!
