I rescued a 37 lb beagle/foxhound mix in December 2020. She had been hit by a car and lost her front leg. She is 2 years old. She doesn’t seem bothered by it at all but since the warmer weather in NY she doesn’t walk on the leash well. She is so excited to go out but then just stops and lays down in road. She did not do this over winter. Is this due to being tired or might something else be going on?

She plays fine in the yard but does tire easily.

Hi and welcome! Your future posts won't need to wait for approval so post away. Thank you for adopting this sweet girl! What is her name? She is so lucky to find her way to a better life with you.

You're so right, dogs aren't bothered by the loss of a limb. And they will do anything to keep up with the pack! Including tiring themselves out to the point of exhaustion. It sounds like the warm weather has something to do with her sitting down, and also a combination of not having enough endurance or stamina to keep up. That will come in time, if you commit to helping her get strong and fit.

(Rehab vets have told us that by the time a dog sits down on a walk, they've already overdone it. Be sure to give her plenty of R&R when she does that, and cut her walks back for a day or so until she recovers). In the meantime you can entertain her and keep her mind sharp with interactive brain games !

The best way to get started with strengthening is to have her evaluated by a canine rehabilitation therapist, who can 1) figure out if something else is going on, and 2) guide you toward safe exercises that help her strengthen and keep injury-free. It makes such a huge difference that the Tripawds Foundation can even pay for your first rehab visit ! So please take advantage of the program, you will learn so many things that can help her now and in the future.

In the meantime our Tripawds Gear blog has tons of exercise tips, and our e-book Loving Life On Three Legs does too! Check em out!
