Perhaps it's just a dream, but I see Tigger participating in Agility Trials. My 4-legged dog Dakota has done it, and when I look at how well my lil Tigger is adapting, I can't help but wonder if she can do the weave poles, see-saw, and tunnels just as well as a 4-legger.

For those who haven't heard Tigger's story (full story in the beyond cancer thread), she was born into a pound and the dog's in the adjoining cage pulled her right front leg through the chain link and ripped it off. Tigger has spent her entire young life in the shelter and then the vet's office before coming here to her foster home (I'm working on making it her permanent home). However, she's been healing and adapting quite well. I think losing a leg so young (I don't believe she's even 6 months old yet) has let her adapt quite well. We go on daily walks (bounces), and she delights in vaulting over logs along the wooded path that we bounce along even if I show her the easier way around.

I exercise regularly and include running in my routine. Yesterday I did a slow run, and Tigger wanted to run and keep pace with me. Of course I adjusted my run to run-walk-run and only ran for short distances, but Tigger seemed to be thrilled that I was running and she bounced right along beside me. It seemed (to me) that she enjoyed it even more than playing chase in the backyard.

So, is it a realistic or unrealistic goal to think that Tigger could handle agility training? I think she would well. I do think I would keep her out of any jumping aspects for fear of damaging the remaing front leg, but I think she could pull off the rest of it.

No dream. Or perhaps just one that can definitely come true!

Excellent!

I've emailed the local agility facility and asked them about admitting Tigger. Pups have to be 6 months old (not sure if Tigger's there yet), but I'll work on her basic training until I either hear back from them or by my own agility set up.

Tigger is young enough that I'm sure she could do this! I agree, I would not do any of the jumping where she would land on her only front leg and risk damaging it, but the rest of it...piece of cake!!

We'll be rooting for Tigger!!!

How fun - sounds like Tigger will love it.  Keep us posted on her progress.

Fantastic videos!  So encouraging.

Bev, I used to do agility with Bon  & was told that dogs should be at least one year old before they start.  It probably depends on Tigger's size, too;  small dogs mature earlier than larger ones.

We stopped agility because Bonnie was good at it, but couldn't quite see the point.  If there'd been squirrels or rabbits going through the tunnels and over the high-walk, it would have made more sense to her!

Sorry, been at work all day and just got home so I could check messages.

I'll try not to rush into anything and just work on her basic training until she gets a bit bigger. Not sure how much bigger she'll get. She's part boxer, part traveling salesman.

Anyanka--the agility people here have their course rigged with a "squirrel" that races the course on a cord just ahead of the dog. I remember watching the course a couple of years ago and a super fast little dog caught their "squirrel" and savaged it in front of everyone. It was hilarious.
