Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Wow, I don't think I'll share my age, LOL. Let's just say records are something my dad had to show me and I was baffled by those big, round, vinyl things, as a kid - much like my own children will be with 'tapes'. I still have a NKOTB tape!
Dante is showing some major issues with dogs. His are definitely part amputation, and also the result of being attacked. He's getting so much better - he even initiated play with a strange dog the other day! I notice it most when he is overwhelmed and his space is limited. He directs it towards Mina most often - if she's bouncing around in his face and he can't get away, or feels trapped, he will lash out. That's the 'fight vs flight' for him for sure. It's easier to fight that flight in that moment. It's also a leash issue too - much like a lot of dogs who are a bit leash reactive, he is even more so sometimes. Not only is he limited in his movement, with a leash he's restricted - so he definitely reacts more when he's leashed than when he's not. Fortunately he's so young and we've made such great progress that I see this as something that at some point will be in the past!

Please feel free to share any tips you have for successfully treating Dante's leash agression issues. But seriously, New Kids? Jerry might have to break out with some Marky Mark...

Oh c'mon now - the new kids are back and better than ever! Okay, not really, LOL.
Really with Dante I've just found as long as we limit the amount of dogs he's meeting at once, and allow him to initiate the meeting, he does okay. With that management and good interactions - he's gotten better in situations we can't control, like the vets office and such. We take him to the dog park on the off hours, so we know we won't encounter hoards and hoards of dogs at once. We don't let meetings go on too long, so that they stay positive. He doesn't react right away like some dogs do - he doesn't start lunging and barking and growling - so he doesn't have strong leash aggression, but the beginning stages of it. I think his is more rooted in fear than true aggression. Initially he was obviously terrified of dogs, and he's still very timid and shy.
So really, I'm not much help, LOL.
