After discovering recently that Dakota has some serious soreness in some thoraic and lumbar regions, I looked around for a good place to try acupuncture on him. I found an extra-cushy joint about 12 miles away called Harmony Vet Center. Dr. Shelley Brown practices "integrative veterinary medicine" there, which means she will prescribe meds if that's the only fix but she will also do some other things like acupuncture or herbal treatments. She also is a pain management specialist.

I thought we were in a dawg spa when I walked in. The floors in my house aren't as nice as the ones that get slobbered, pooped and peed on there (cherry wood? seriously?) The exam room was something else. No plastic chairs there. Instead, a love seat, a stereo in the corner and a (get this) prefabbed cut-out in the floor that accommodates the plush dog bed they stick into it. And then cover with a fleecy blanket.

Dakota went into this appointment as he always goes into anything new: with much anxiety, panting and slobbering. However, he did well during the treatment. I was told not to expect any changes after the first session, but he actually did relax a ton during the time we were there. In fact, it scared me on kind of a primal level. He rolled onto his side, let out a huge, noisy sigh, and just laid there incredibly limp. In my tiny little primal brain, I screamed "he's dead!" because that sigh and limpness were unfortunately just like the relaxing giving-in to sedation at life's end. I've seen it too many times, so I couldn't help it. I thought he was dead. I guess that shows how he really relaxed.oh-my

One potentially troubling thing came out of the exam. Dakota had a spot on his foot that I had seen, but after it was trimmed up and examined further, Dr. Brown thinks it is likely a melanoma. She said since it's been there awhile, it's likely a benign melanoma. She recommends removing it and sending it to pathology, though she wasn't bothered enough by it to urge me to do it immediately. I have to believe that's a good sign.

I'm out of town all next week, so Dakota will go back in about 10 days for his second treatment. Hopefully we'll see some better movement and less reluctance to get up and about. I want him to enjoy a good back-scratching roll in the grass before summer's over.

I'm glad Dakota did well!  I have considered acupuncture for Zeus, but he doesn't seem to have problems so far and he HATES the vet's office so I just can't bring myself to do it.  I am very curious to see how this plays out with Dakota.

By the way, that is one seriously long tongue...

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Oh, he looks great, chilling at the spa. Hope the little potential melanoma spot is nothing serious!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. My vet also does acupuncture, uses the k-laser, and herbal supplements as well as conventional western med stuff. I love that about her. I was going to do acupuncture on my arthritic dog, but I couldn't get her in often enough to help. As with the k-laser for arthritis, she wants to do at least 3 treatments the first week, 2 the second, and then maybe 1 a week for a while. She feels like you need the frequency in the beginning to see the change. Just curious - did your vet mention this? Glad Dakota liked it. My dog got one treatment, got all the needles inserted, gave one nice shake, and shook most of the needles out... so they got reinserted. =)

Dukez, the vet did not suggest that same frequency that you're describing. She said she generally recommends once a week for 4 weeks. If no improvement is noted after the 4th, she stops acupuncture and does something different. She said she usually recommends weekly so that the full impact of the treatment has a chance to be noticed. I have no idea if maybe the difference in protocol comes from age of dog, nature of problem, last year's recommendations vs this year's...who knows? For now it has to be this way because I won't be here next week to take him. The earliest I can repeat is 10 days this time.

I hope to see some continued relaxation, at least. And maybe some improvement happened today since he was able to relax so much.

I forgot to say that, in the car, Dakota saturates the back area with nervous slobber. He loudly pants, huffs and puffs for as long as we're driving (even in winter). On the way home, he laid down in the back and did not make any panting noise at all. He may have been panting some, but I didn't hear it.
