I found this article to be so spot on, and incredibly helpful.

How to Help Your Dog with Cancer When He Won’t Eat

When Jerry wouldn't eat because of the cancer, I cried. When I begged him to eat, I cried. When I frantically tried a million different foods to see if he would just eat one thing, I cried. How I wish I had an article like this to ground me. Hope it helps anyone faced with this tough situation.

OH you must have known I needed this.  He did eat today.  Tried putting a new food in a different kind of bowl he ate a little of that then ate more hamburger, rice and bone broth.  With him eating I didn't want to over feed then and make him sick so I might try another smaller meal a little later.  Instead of 3 meals I might try 2.

Oh and I did use your suggestion of using a plate.  (makes a mess with the rice but have a vacuum so not a big deal). I am just celebrating him eating.

What a wonderful article! So helpful, definitely things i need to rethink feeding Mitchell.

Michelle, have you tried adding some canned tripe? I get solid gold canned tripe, and whole fat cottage cheese for Mitchell. Those 2 foods have been amazing for Mitchell's appetite. I get the big cans (it's really stinky) and warm up leftovers, mash it with a fork, and mix it into his kibble.

Sometimes i add cottage cheese to it too, sometimes i just put the cottage cheese on his kibble.

I get the best deal on Chewy. Tripe is really good for them if you can stand the smell of it. I feel like I'm feeding him cow pies but he loves it.

Jackie

Yeah, I have to be careful because really rich foods gives him the runs.  (he is already having that issue because of the nasty antibiotic he is on for this staph infection.)   I am not sure he would eat cottage cheese my dogs are picky LOL with treats.

Really good article.  Like Paula I think I did all the wrong things when I was trying to get Maggie to eat!

And the self select part is interesting too.  I figured out with Elly that she doesn't like her food mixed together-she will eat everything but not if it's all mixed up.   I just thought she was a weirdo but it sounds like it isn't that odd.

Our biggest fault has been hovering over him to eat. And we take turns feeding which made things more confusing. David hangs right there in him coaching him to eat and getting stressed when he didn't Around the time of his surgery last year Mitch was losing weight and sometimes skipping 2 meals before we got him to eat.

I started putting the food down and telling him good boy. Then I turned my back to him and washed dishes, made coffee, whatever I was doing. He would stand there for a moment, but realizing he didn't have my stress nor my attention he would clean his bowl. We could never figure out why.

I also mixed a lot of foods together when I tried to cook for him. Bingo! Now I am wondering if I kept some of those foods separate if he would have liked them better.

Very enlightening, I really got a lot out of it, thank you!

Oh I totally thought that self-select information was super valuable! Makes total sense.

And Jackie I did the same thing with Jerry but I never got smart about it like you did Great job!
