It's Wookie's birthday today, he would have been 3 yrs old. He's been gone for almost 6 mos, but at times the pain is still almost unbearable. I ask myself, when will I get to the place where I will be able to celebrate the life that was, rather than mourn the life that is gone? I don't know the answer.

I still cry for him every day. Sometimes it is first thing in the morning, sometimes it's not until late at night. I know he doesn't want me to be sad, but I seem to have no control over it.

We didn't really have any special plans for today. We took the 3 boys to the dog park (Spock, Bones, and our newest adoptee, Rocco), but it was warm and they weren't feeling very playful. So we went to visit Wookie's tree (in a memorial tree park very close to the dog park). Wookie's tree (an oak), has definitely grown and sprouted it's spring leaves. At that point, I noticed that Rocco was getting a sunburn (he has lost almost all the hair on the back half of his body, probably due to untreated flea allergies), so I didn't want to stay any longer. And, to be honest, I didn't feel like Wookie was "there".

And speaking of Rocco... he has so many Wookie mannerisms. Just the way he looks at you is so Wookie. We have 4 different couches that he's welcome to be on, but he sleeps in the exact same spot that Wookie did. When we were driving to the dog park today, Rocco sat behind me with his head resting on my shoulder most of the way. We've only had this dog for 5 days! I like to think that a little part (or a big part) of Wookie has come back to me. How can that be? Rocco is almost 6 yrs old! But that's the way it feels. Maybe Wookie sent Rocco our way to ease my pain. That would be such a Wookie thing to do.

Anyway, I don't think I have anything wise or insightful to share. I just miss my boy so very much.

Happy Birthday, Wookie.

Right hind limb amputated 7/3/12 for OSA, started on alternating cycles of Carboplatin and Doxorubicin and oral Palladia. Single lung met 9/1. Met in the neck muscle removed 9/30. Large mass in sublumbar lymph node 10/2. Rescue chemo with ifosfamide 10/6. Mets to the rib and axillary lymph node 10/21. Started Leukeran and Pred 10/25. Wookie left this Earth for a far better place on 12/4/12. I miss you, Boo, you were my heart.

Happy Wookie Day.  Wookie we all miss you.  We definately know your momma misses you more than anything in this world.  I am happy you sent Rocco her way so she can have a little piece of mind.  It was such a sweet thing to do.

We know you are watching down and keeping an yeye on your mommah.  Have a Happy Birthday Wookie.

Kelly, I know its not easy.  I am not going to even say it gets better with time because I know it took me a long long time to get over some grief I felt for one of my dogs.  Wookie was your heart dog and will always be with you.

HAPPY WOOKIE DAY!  Wookie was a beautiful soul with the most beautiful soulful eyes I've ever seen in a dog.  You can tell by the pictures he was the most loved dog.  I know the pain is so bad sometimes Kelly, and I wish I could give you the answer as to when it will stop, but I just don't know :(

I'm so glad Rocco is with you now (and bones and spock too!).  I really do think Wookie sent him to you.  I REALLY REALLY do.

Thank you for being my FairyVetMother.  Wookie's beautiful soul shines and lives through you.

xoxo always,

Erica

Wookie, you will always be treasured and remembered by so many people, including everyone at Tripawds but especially your Momma. Did you send Rocco to her? I believe that completely. Dogs know exactly what people need, and they come to humans to share lessons, to make their lives better. Your Mom made the big step by opening her heart to dogs who needed a good human, I know you showed her in your own special way that it's OK to bring them home and add them to her pack.

I know it's hard Kelly, nobody can say for certain when things get better because everyone is different, but I just promise you that eventually it gets less painful. My heart goes out to you on this very special Wookie Day.

Kelly,

I know it is so hard.  No one can tell you when it will be better or how long you should grieve, each of us gets though a loss on our own time line.

I do believe that our departed pups look out for us, Maggie has helped me countless times when things get tough in my life.

I also firmly believe that there are lessons to be learned from each of our life experiences, and often the most profound lessons come from the really hard times. If nothing else, we learn that we can get though it and continue to function, maybe not at 100% for awhile, but we keep moving forward.

Sometimes some good can come out of these crappy cancer journeys. Wookie brought you to us here at Tripawds, and you have stayed, made friends, and helped lots of people and pups and kitties.  That is a good thing in my book. And it does sound like Rocco is channeling Wookie- I think it is Wookie's version of leaving pennies for you, to let you know he is OK.

I'm sorry for your pain.  I smile when I see his sweet face.  I don't think it's any coincidence your new pup has Wookie's mannerisms.

Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13.  Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14.  She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self.  Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14

Thinking of you and Wookie. So glad Rocco is there to help you and he was obviously sent to you by your very special guardian angel. No matter how long our dog kids are gone - it often hurts to remember, but it is also wonderful. Smile today for Wookie.

Spirit Shooter was a Miniature Australian Shepherd who was diagnosed with a MCT and had a LF amp 1/28/13 at 13-1/2 years old.

Shooter crossed the Bridge on 8/28/13, his 7 month ampuversary and two weeks from his 14th birthday.

Kelly, I am just seeing your post now and wanted to send belated birthday wishes to Wookie.  I don't remember what I was looking at or saw, but I remember thinking "that looks just like Wookie!"  So Wookie, you are remembered.  I'm happy you brought another dog into your life, and I'm sure Rocco knows already how lucky he is.

Harley is an 8 year old Golden Retriever. Amp surgery for an infiltrative lipoma canceled due to two masses in chest. A rescue, he found his forever home on 3/18/07 and left for his eternal home on 1/09/13. His story and medical history are at http://myharley.....pawds.com/

Happy birthday Wookie.  I know your momma misses you.  Maybe that is why you sent her Rocco.  He is your penny from heaven.
