among many tears, i think we have decided to help Reeses become pain free.  This is so hard since she is out with her guy for her morning "walk" right now

Last night she started to cough a lot.  I know this is a sign the cancer has gone into the lungs.  We consistantly doubt our decision...couldn't find the vet number, couldn't find the phone - a sign to not do this perhaps?   We know her days are numbered either way, and though heavily crying, I think we came to an agreement that we don't want this to get to the point that its so bad she's visually miserable.

So... who knows, we may change our minds again, but at this time, i think we are going to do it today.  It will be so weird after 10 years of coming to a dogless house.  When our other dog went to the bridge mothersday last year, we still had a happy Reeses to come home to.  Not this time.

Oh, my heart aches for you.  This is never an easy decision.  We are also concerned about the time when we lose Zeus as it will be the first time in 14 years we will not have a baby greeting us at the door.  When we lost Merlin three years ago, we had Zeus to help heal our heart.  My thoughts are with you and I wish you guidance as to the 'right time' so that you may be at peace.

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Thanks.  She is an overall happy doggy when she is with us.  When she is not, well, she's not at her happiest.  Sarah asked me if I didn't think this was the right thing to do and therein is the conflict.  I know it is the right thing to do, I just simply don't want to.

I've convinced myself that it is because I know it will end the suffering she chooses to hide from us, and worse, the suffering we can see.

It will be hard, especially now that we have an appointment.  I think we are going to pile into the car and drive around, find some place new and let her sniff around, explore something new, and eat some hot dogs along the way.

Thanks everyone on here for support.

Hi,

So sad to hear your situation. It's really one of worst things to say good bye to a dog. Thinking of you sad.

we are so sorry that reeses' time with you is ending.  losing both of our girls last year, we know how hard it is to make this decision, but it is up to you to be reeses' advocate.  releasing her from her failing and broken body is a final, selfless act.  her brave spirit will always be with you, and your memories of all of the wonderful years together will remain forever.  love never ends.

I am so sorry to read this. We were there not long ago. It is so hard. When we end their pain, ours begins. I hope you will have peace knowing it is what is best for her.

Jackie, angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. We will be thinking of your family and Reeses this weekend. May you find peace in knowing that Reeses has fought so hard and like Charon said you are her advocate to help her become pain free.

So sorry.  Give yourself plenty of time and space to grieve, whenever you end up letting her go.  Your decision will be the right one.

Gerry has been a tripawd since 12/16/2009.

He was a shelter dog with a mysterious past and an irrepairable knee injury.
