It's with great sadness that I have to write that Sophie has lost her fight and my wife and I will be saying goodbye to her this afternoon.  As I had posted earlier, her tumor had grown quite a bit in the last 4-6 weeks and two nights ago she started whimpering.  My wife and I had promised ourselves, and Sophie, that at the first sign of discomfort we were going to let her move on.  It just kills me because she still has a great spirit and actually ran out the front door this morning after a squirrel. But the tumor has grown to the point where is has really impeded her ability to walk and rest comfortably. The hardest part is today is her eighth birthday, but we have loved on her the last two nights and we know that our other dane, Daisy who passed three years ago, will be waiting to greet Sophie with her trademark howl when they meet up.  A big thanks to all of you who have been so supportive.

I am so sorry to hear this.  You have given Sophie such a great life filled with love and happiness.  Saying goodbye to our babies is never easy, but you are showing her one last act of love by letting her go so she no longer will be suffering.  Dasiy will be waiting for her on the other side.  Daisy and Sophie  will both be watching over you and comforting you. I will be thinking about you both today as you stand by Sophie on her final journey home.

This is so sad, I'm really sorry. It's such a tough call to make, but you are doing right by Sophie by not letting her suffer. In this life it's all about quality, and your family definitely gave that to her. Our hearts go out to you.

I'm so sorry Sophie as come to the end of her journey. What a Warrior Princess! She beat the odds and lived life LARGE! I like the picture of your two Danes meeting at the bridge, I hope that eases the pain just a tiny bit.
Sophie will always be in your heart and so will always be by your side.

I'm so sad to hear this about your wonderful Sophie. To lose a beloved dog is such a sad thing.
You know in your heart that it is her time and I'm sure she will thank you for your bravery.
I'm sure we see all of our lost pets first when we arrive in Heaven. God wouldn't have it any other way for his special pet guardians.
I'm reminded of one of my favorite quotes:

Our Super Dog Hunter crossed over the Rainbow Bridge on a beautiful summer day in July, just 3 days shy of his 10th Birthday. He gave us everything since he was 8 weeks old.  Hunter was a 14 month warrior of OS.  We LOVE and MISS him every day.

I'm so sorry to hear Sophie's battle has ended.  She was such a brave girl, and fought valiantly.  This decision is never an easy one, but you are giving her the last gift you can by letting her go on to her next adventure.  Sending healing thoughts to your family.

I am so sorry to hear that Sophie's battle is over. Helping our beautiful dogs move onto their next journey is the toughest decision we can make for them.  But it is made out of love. Thinking of you at this difficult time.

Saddened to hear that you had to let Sophie go today...heartbreaking decision that no pawrent wants to make.  May she run free in the big dog park in the sky!

Oh you are so right--it breaks our hearts when it's time to help them find their wings. And a warrior who lives large like Sophie will leave large pawprints to fill. Thank you for letting her know that it was all for her and that her comfort was paramount. I'm so sorry for your loss, so grateful that she was so well loved. What a reunion Sophie and Daisy will have!

Thank you all for the kind words.  I had a wonderful couple of hours with her when I got home before Susie and I headed off to the vet with her.  We were loving on her, petting on her when she left for her walk across the Rainbow Bridge.
