There is a poem by Gary Paulsen called Dogsong - it is a beautiful Inuit tribute to the ancient sled dogs that Buster is decended from. I have always thought it was beautiful, and maybe you will too.

One thing I have done with all of my greyhound angels is to make memory books of them. I sort out all the photos of them to put in it & I write a lot of things I never want to forget, no matter how silly they seem. Making the book seems to help heal me as I am remember the happy times. I usually started the book right after they went to the bridge.
We also have a cement greyhound statue that is in a corner of out living room. On that statue I have placed a special collar that I ordered for one of my bridge babies who passed before it ever arrived. On that collar we put the tags of each bridge baby as they pass. It's our memorial to all of our bridge kids.
I am so blessed to have a vet as my best friend. She has come to my home many times as we released my dear greyhounds. Only twice have I had to take them to a clinic.

I spoke to a medical intuitive... an animal communicator. Since, Buster seems fine to me. We go for our walks and he is eating well. No coughing, if anything this news has made be sick! So, if he has only weeks to live why does he seem to be ok?
I've been doing some research and not all teaching hospitals work the same way. Apparently the cancer treatment you get depends upon the place your taking your pet. Never thought geographic 's would have such an influence...
Anyway back to the intuitive, I heard of here during a fund raiser for a local animal shelter and she is in demand. I have found out Red Bank Animal hospital in North Jersey has a better oncology dept.. and I may want to hear what they have to say. They even use the metronomic protocol... which Univ of Penn never even heard of and once I showed them the info for it they would not support. I was told it could make Buster sicker and he may even die from it.
Anyway, this is what is going through in my head today. It was a good day in the dog park too... Buster played with several younger dogs and no one can believe he is ill, just missing a leg.
I know there is no cure at this point, but he still has quality of life. I just want to slow down the mets....His eye's say Mom I can hang.

We're glad you had a lovely day outside, it sounds like it was perfect. How wonderful to hear that he's still his old self. That is such a great sign.
You're right, not all hospitals are the same. Like we said before, it's suprising that the University never heard of Metronomics before, but like you, we've also heard good things about Red Bank's oncology department. If you decide to go there, we hope you can get in quickly. Please let us know.
We are curious to know about the kinds of information you found when you were researching hospitals, just for our own knowledge. Can you point us to some links?
And yeah, Buster can definitely hang!

I had called about Red Bank on Saturday and could of seen them on Monday, since Univ of Penn isn't open on the weekend. I just heard from the oncologist today and she has faxed over his full blood chem and x-rays 2 RB. I didn't want to stress out and drive an hour away... anyway I have an appt there on Friday with there oncology dept...
I was on the fence about going ,and the intuitive encouraged me to go ... and call her back after Red Bank. Her name is Elizabeth Severino D.R.S & you can google her...

After what Kristen told me about U of Penn's missing Jack's cancer of the greater trochanter, which caused a huge delay in treatment, I'm not so sure about them, at all. And, now they don't even know about the Metronomic Protocol? Is this normal with teaching hospitals?

Being limited by where you get treatment...
I was surprised too. Naive me, thinking they could call Ohio State or Colorado State... to find out more options and work with another Dr. Liability? The oncologist herself would of liked to have known more about it. However, things like this have to be approved by hospital boards. Even to conduct a study, you need to collect a pool, you need approval and funding. They don't want to take chances unless it has it has some what of a success... they have a reputation to live up too!
It is a shame, if not now, when? Why does Ohio State research artemisinin ? and Colorado State metronomic protocol? I guess what I'm trying to say,so much money goes into the same old treatment, why haven't more advances been made? Because it hasn't meet some-one's approval? This is not acceptable to me...
I have to verify this but a friend that researches DNA and bone marrow treatment told me in china they do the chemo first then if that doesn't control it then they operate...
Maybe, I'm cynical, but I think if they can all work together it would really increase the odds of beating cancer. Instead, of each one trying to take credit. There are a lot of good Dr's out there but sometimes they are limited to what they can do because of where they work...

Kim, It is definitely true that not all vet schools are equal in all fields. Some excel at surgery, some oncology, and some are better known for reproduction or equine medicine. The best oncology dept I know of on the East Coast is Cornell but Red Bank sounds good and they are willing to work with you.
I still haven't had any responses to my inquiries on Artemisinin . I am hoping it is because of the holidays! I have still not seen my holistic vet because freak snowstorms keep delaying my appt. but I am now scheduled for Monday 12/29 so I will see what I can find. Maybe Red Bank has used this?
I agree that Buster looks very happy and remember that lung mets can grow slowly. I'm sure that they were there last time he was xrayed but were just too small to show up (less than 2 mm). If they can be slowed down he could have a lot more time!

Kim, I couldn't agree with you more on this. So much time and valuable resources are wasted by each school researching the same things when it would seem that if they all banded together, they could make greater 'inroads" into finding a cure for cancer.
