Charley is my 3 year old English Setter who was hit by a car last October & lost his left front leg.

He's healing (medically) wonderfully and is SO strong.  The problem is he isn't heeling (on a leash) very well.  wink  Truth is, he never was very good at it.

Pre-accident, I used a Gentle Leader Easy Walk Harness with him.  It had a martingale ring right on the front of his chest - so if he pulled away from me, it automatically brought him right around.  It made walks a total breeze!

Unfortunately, this harness doesn't fit him well at all since the amputation.  I've adjusted everything & it just slips around....

SO - here's my question!  I've looked at the Ruff Wear harness -- which I know fits well for tripawds -- but would it stop him from pulling?  Do you have other suggestions?

Choke collars don't really help.  wink  Plus I'm a big softie where Charley is concerned.

Many thanks!

Thanks for checking in! Good to hear that the Buckaroo is doing well.

Some members have reported using the Ruff Wear Webamaster to help control dogs on walks, but putting a harness on some breeds may actually encourage them to pull.

These existing topics may offer solutions to help walk Charley, but keep in mind that it is much easier for Tripawds – especially front leg amputees – to hop along at a quick pace than it is for them to walk slowly!

Flexi leads?

I'm sure someone here will post advice, Daisy (also a tripawd by car) is a rear amp and cannot get around without a cart and Samson (aka Monkeybutt Samson007) is just an old couch potato and has no desire to go fast.way-confused I really like the ruffwear harness for controlling her, it has a big clip on the back for a leash.

Daisy earned her wings on Oct 22, 2011 at 14 years old

She is now the official greeter at the rainbow bridge

Thanks for the feedback!  I don't know that a Flexi would work - we live in a sidewalked area now (just moved 2 weeks ago) and the roaming across lots of lawns could be more problematic.

However, I think I'm going to check out the Gentle Leader Headcollar - a dog trainer friend of mine suggested it.  She pointed out that it's a lot like what horses use - so that makes it seem a little friendlier.  wink

Totally laughed at one of the other posts when someone referred to her pup doing the "Dead Digger Dog" thing -- where he just flops down on the ground and won't move anywhere.  Charley has taken to doing that fairly often -- just going limp & not moving anymore.  It's not because he's tired, he's just being a total stinker and doesn't want the walk to end yet!!

Have a great weekend!

Be sure to check out Wyatt's review and demo video. It sure helped us get him under control.
