My Australian Shepherd, Ace, recently had his back leg removed due to an injury where instead of healing, the toe bones re-asorbed leaving no toe bones in his foot. He recovered from the surgery great and its been a full month with nothing but great news and quick recovery.
The other day he was with me all day. I was watering my garden and he was with me being his normal happy self, begging for me to play a game of fetch with him. I petted him turned around for 30 seconds and looked back and he was laying on his back having what looked to me as a seizure. He was drooling all over, his eyes were shaking and going all over, he had his head tipped back and wouldn't respond to anything. I quickly picked him up, got in the car and took him to the vet. He was having the seizure the whole time. The vet said that he looked like he had gotten poisoned from something. He right away gave him a tranquilizer and started him on fluids. All this time Ace was not responsive and still acted as if he was having a seizure. The vet said that his heart and his lungs sounded fine.
We do live on a ranch and we were working cattle that day, but the dog was either right by my side or in the mud room away from all the commotion while we were working. He had no time to get into anything and if he did get into something poisonous, we have no idea what it would have been.
The vet called us the next morning saying that Ace hadn't improved much. We did mention that maybe a blood clot from the surgery might have caused this, or maybe a brain tumor. There is nothing around our house that he could have gotten into. He was by our side the whole day. And it happened so quickly! He showed no signs of distress before the seizure. He was a perfectly normal happy dog.
Last night the vet called and said that Ace had been sitting up and he knew his name but a dog barked in the background and caused him to go into another episode of a seizure. We haven't heard from the vet yet today. Today is Monday and this all happened Saturday night at 9pm. What is going on with my dog? How does a seizure last for hours or days? Somebody please give me some advice.

Oh no! I'm so very sorry to hear this, I can't imagine how tough and upsetting this whole situation is. Hope he's feeling better soon. I'm not a vet but hopefully our Fairy Vet Mother Dr. Wiltzius will be able to chime in soon.

What is the vet giving to control the seizures for now? What I would want to know is, what is the next step? It sounds like a CT scan or MRI may be in order to get a definitive diagnosis. Has the vet mentioned this? If not, I would want a referral to a neurologist immediately. Any number of things can cause a seizure but when they keep occurring like this I would seek specialty help asap.

I'm so sorry. Please keep us posted, you and Ace are in our thoughts.

I would transfer to a specialty hospital ASAP! A neurologist's opinion is essential with any type of seizure. It could be anything from idiopathic epilepsy to tetanus to meningitis. Best wishes to Ace and keep us updated!

I would do as Mandy said and take him to a speciality hospital. Hope this all resolves itself ASAP for Ace and you.

Said good bye to my Acer bean today. He had brain damage and he wasn't going to get any better. He was pretty unresponsive and his eyes were twitching around. I talked to him and he you could tell he did recognize my voice. Never found out how it happened. Which is the part that bugs me the most. I never thought saying good bye could be so hard. Thank you for the advice. I'm sorry I didn't have any time to put it to use. This is an awesome site and I'm glad I got to be apart of it for the short time I was.

Oh I am so sorry.... I lost my girl., Shelby, several weeks ago due to seizures but Shelby was fighting cancer and that led to cancer in the brain. I am so sorry for your loss and I know how painful this is (and how quickly it comes on). Sending you lots of healing energy and love

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Just as he took your love with him, he left his love with you.

I kow he felt privilegd to jave you as his soulmate here on earth.

May your broken heart soon be glued back together with all the delightful loveing memories you and Ace have shared. That would make him happy to see you smile when you think of him. He is still bymyour side.

I was so saddened to see your update... I'm so sorry you had to go through that. As Sally said, Ace knew you were there and said his goodbye even if you didn't hear him and now he's playing with all of our other good souls on rainbow bridge. Please post more pictures for us, he's such a handsome dog!

Huge hug! Mandy and Mav
