My sons dog Penny was hit by a car. After trying to put hip back in place on hind leg it would not stay in place. Surgery was to expensive. The other option was amputation which was supposed to happen today. The vet called and told my son she would not do it because she thought her other knee MIGHT be bad. Is this common?

It is possible the dog has a ruptured ACL but that would not necessarily preclude amputation.

Yikes, sorry to hear about Penny! Please consider starting a new topic in Beyond Cancer so others can follow along and offer insight, we know this is a tough situation.

Is she at the vet clinic right now? And is she on any pain medication? I hope so. Meanwhile did your vet refer you to a specialist who can evaluate her for amputation surgery? If not, please ask for a referral to a board-certified orthopedic vet, so you can know for sure if she's a good candidate.

Oh gosh!! Sorry you are dealing with this!!!

Yeah, if you can get Penny on some good pain meds and keep her quiet and confined, that will give you time to get another opinion!! Many "regular" Vets aren't as familiar with amputatuon and everything it entails like a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon.

As Jerry said, try to get an appointment with a Specialist.

ALSO, find out what specifically the Vet was referring to about the other leg.
"Might be bad" doesn't prevent an amputation.....even "if bad", that doesn't necessarily prevent amputation!

We see lots of dogs who have arthritis, or hip issues, bad knees, etc who do just fine on three legs!

How old is Penny? How much does she weigh? Other than this awful accident, she's in good health?

Yes, please get another opinion from a Specialist. Where do you live? Jerry maybe able to find you a Specialist in your area.

Update us as soon as you can, okay? I know amputation sounds scary, but ince recovery is done, Penny will be back to enjoying life and soaking up all that spoiling and loving she deserves! 🙂

Paws crossed you can get a good evaluation and proceed with getting that bum leg off!

Hugs to you and your son!
