Hello!

How many days before the surgery should a greyhound be taking the Amniocaproic acid?  I am still waiting to see the surgeon and I am hoping my regular vet will call in a script for me.

Thank you !!

Typically I start a Greyhound on 500 mg the day before surgery and continue it for 5 days.  WSU has a genetic test for this but I am not sure if you have time to have it done (DEPOHGEN) which stands for delayed post-op hemorrhage.  This test can be run on any sight hound which also includes Irish Wolfhounds and Scottish Deerhounds.  There may be other sources of this test; I have not checked to see if it is in the Embark genetic panel.

Sight hounds are also prone to hyperthermia during and after anesthesia so I typically sedate them quickly and try to do them first.  I am sure that the specialist should be aware of these conditions but it never hurts to ask.

Thank you Dr. Pam for your reply. Good news, the surgeon called in the med for me and they are having me start it the day before surgery which is Friday if all goes well.

I will talk to him about the hypothermia too.  I know he has operated on many greyhounds.

Thank you again!

Glad to see Pam and Vaughn got greyt advice from Dr. Pam.

Hoping all prep and final diagnostics or tests go well and he is cleared for surgery as planned, Pam.

On October 27, 2016, nearly 6 months after amputation, and 18 months since his cancer likely started, we lost Pofi to a recurrence of Soft Tissue Sarcoma in his spine quite suddenly.  His canine sister also succumbed to cancer on March 1, 2019 - we lavished her with our love in the interim, but life was never quite the same without her only real canine friend. Cliff kitty had to leave us, too, suddenly, in August 2019. Lucia kitty grieved all these losses, but helped us welcome two new Lurchers into our home and our lives, Shae and Barley.
