Hello,

I have a 7 and a half year old Saint Bernard. She had a pathological fracture in July that we believed could be an osteosarcoma. It has now been 5 months and it has not spread to her lungs. The leg has been in a brace for the last 5 months. She runs, plays and uses leg for balance. Her spirits are good. Due to the break down of the bone and another fracture we are considering amputation. The brace is keeping her stable. I am concerned due to her age, weight etc. how her quality of life after amputation would be. Would it be better to just stabilize her and continue palliative care or perform the amputation?

Thanks for your help,

Beth

What does your vet say?  Is the cancer in her front leg?  Doe she have any hind leg issues?  Overweight?  Many giant dogs do well on three legs, and I guarantee she will have less pain without that leg.  She probably already has muscle atrophy and may be used to bearing more weight on the other three.  I assume she had recent chest xrays.....
