I'm sorry Nova is having such a hard time.  I have to join the others in saying it sounds like an ear infection.  If Nova is using echolocation to compensate for being blind then an ear infection will really mess her up.  Personally I would go to the regular vet rather than the oncologist or the opthamologist, but that is just my opinion.

We are sorry to hear that Queen Nova is having more troubles.  It really does sound like she has something going on with the ears though.  Being an ex-vet tech, some ear infections will really throw a dog off and with Nova being blind, she uses her hearing to help her around.  Sniff the ears, sometimes there is a distinct odor when infection occurs.  Head shaking is also a sign that something is going on in the inner ear.  Has Nova recently had a bath?  She may have water stuck in there, or possibly a yeast infection.

Keep us posted on how she is doing.

I like the ear-infection theory Oslo and other wise tripawds have suggested. Now Chuy's last comment really got me thinking . . .

She may have water stuck in there,
or

Maybe a sock???? winker

(before you get mad at me, dearest Queenie, check out "silly worries" posted by King Oslo. Hey! Queen Nova and King Oslo - I never put that together before now oh-my

Emily's echolocation theory is really cool! They have shown that dogs and even blind humans can compensate for loss of sight by echolocating, but obviously Emily already knew that!

(tazziedog will have a few big chuckles when she returns home and reads this long thread of replies to Nova's "ask a vet". Just because you ask a vet, doesn't mean the rest of us won't answer, does it?!?)

I answered Sue via PM but I will also post here.  The head shaking could be due to an ear infection, a foreign body in the ear (grass seeds, etc), or even a hard wax buildup just over the ear drum. Usually middle or inner ear infections would cause a head tilt or balance issues.  Worsening glaucoma is also a possibility in the other eye so a pressure check is a great idea (Sue's regular vet should be able to do this easily).

In general OSA rarely goes to the brain and would be more likely to involve the face or nasal bones so symptoms would be facial swelling or pain and most brain tumors should cause a head tilt, changes to the pupil, or abnormal use of the limbs.  I also think it is possible that Nova had a tiny bit of vision before that is now gone so could be causing some confusion.

I'm sure that Sue will keep us all updated!

Sue,

It also sounds to me like an ear infection... plus, Nova just finished a round of antibiotics... could be yeast that flared up now that the bacteria is gone... A good ear exam and cytology will give you the answer. I hope it's nothing more serious than that!

Keeping my fingers crossed and hope to hear some good news on Monday!

Thanks, all, for all the advice.  I think I am going to try to get Nova into the vet either tomorrow or Wednesday.  My first get feeling was that it was her eyes, that perhaps she wasn't 100% blind and now she is.  I thought maybe waiting it out to see if she figured it out, but it really doesn't seem like that is the problem.  This morning she seemed to be finding her way a little better, but tonight once again she is all confused, walking into furniture, under tables, etc. All the while her tail is wagging and she is acting happy.  Many of you have mentioned ear problems.  I know she can hear because she responds to many commands and her ears perk up and tail starts thumping when I call her.  So I know there is not a hearing loss. She whines every time she gets up. It doesn't seem to be from pain, more like from frustration, like she is calling out for me to come and help her. I'm just so exhausted, it's such a big production getting her out to pee 2-3times a day, then to her food dish.

I know she can still hear well, since this morning when she went outside a rabbit hopped across the yard and she stopped, wrinkled her forehead, and followed the sound with her head.  I suppose she could have felt vibrations on the ground or smelled it, but it sure looked like she could hear it.

Paws crossed that the Queen is back to her old self so she doesn't have to go to the vet again. Keep us posted, we're thinking about her.

Well we went to the vet today, and not much to report.  There is definitely nothing wrong with Nova's ears.  Her hearing is great.  The vet agreed with me that perhaps she wasn't totally blind before, but now she is.  She did have one episode last week which reminded me of when her pressures were up in her eye (way back when). But I am confused because the opthamologist has told me since last April that Nova was 100% blind.  He also said that there might be a (remote) possibility of a brain tumor, not necessarily metastisizing from the osteo, but something that was already there.  But she's not having seizures or other strange symptoms. He said the only way to know for sure would be to have a CT scan or MRI which would be well over $1000.  It just doesn't make sense to spend all that money to "find out if" when the likelihood is remote, plus, if there WAS a brain tumor I wouldn't be able to do surgery anyway. So watch and wait is all I can do.

He agreed with me that Nova sudden confusion is troubling, but that Nova is pretty high maintenance so it might all just be dog drama from Nova suddenly losing what little sight she had (even though we didn't think she had sight). I guess we will never really know.  This is one of those times where you wish there was this magic button on the dog that you could just press to just have her answer one question in "human" rather than dog.  I know that sounds stupid, but dang, it would make it so much easier to figure out what's wrong.  Could you see a little before, Nova, but not now?  Does your head hurt? Are you forgetting things? Or are you just playing me to get attention? lol So many questions to ask that will never get answered.  If only I could speak dog.

Geeze, I wish I could have walked out of there with an answer that satisfied me.  I could go to the opthamologist now, but all they are going to do is check her eyes and say "Yep, she's blind." And I could go to the oncologist, but all she's going to do is say spend another few K to "find out" if there is a brain tumor.  If there is, then I can't do a thing about it, so what's the point?

I hope this is all just Nova not being quite blind, now is totally blind, and is just being her overly dramatic self.

Oh, wow, I wish you had some better answers.  You're right, it is very difficult to guess at what you're dealing with.  Trouble is the drama queen also, so I know exactly what you're saying.  I'm thinking if they had that button, we still wouldn't get a 'I'm just playing you mom!" answer.

Hang in there, she adjusted before, and she will adjust this time to whatever the change is that isn't evident to you.  Love you, Nova, but please stop stressing your mom!

Sue,

My biggest disappointment regarding the vet visit is that you cannot get a definitive answer. I presume that the way forward from here is just more TLC for the Queen, and that can not be bad. Take a deep breath again, give a sigh, and enjoy as you approach the big 17 month ampuversary. We'll be watching for the post.

Also, welcome back to school.

Sue,

Was your vet able to check Nova's eye pressure?

Pam, yes. Her pressures were fine.  But she has had pressure spikes way back when, that is what I was told originally caused her blindness.  There was one night last week when she wouldn't settle down, whining a lot, panting, etc. I didn't think of it at the time, but it really was similar to the time she first went blind last April.  Perhaps she had a quick pressure spike that knocked out the remainder of her sight.  That's the only thing that makes sense.  What doesn't make sense is that she has seemingly forgotten all of her patterns through the house... to the door, the water/food dish, outside, etc.  My vet seemed to believe that she should still be able to remember these.  I guess I will just wait and see how she does and if she adapts more.  She is sooooo happy all the time, so that helps.

Sue, you are speaking dog. It sounds to me like you're going with the flow, and leaving it up to the Universe at this point. Which is absolutely fine and IMHO the best thing for you and the pack.

When Jerry got sick, we had to decide where we would draw the line when it came to more tests and medications to put off the inevitable. We could go on forever trying to diagnose his latest symptoms but what and how much time would those tests get him? Like you, we were not willing to put him through more surgeries because we wanted to focus on quality time together. We let nature run its course and we tried our best not to look back, because that is the Way of Dog.

Sounds like Nova's idea of quality time is getting you to dote on her day and night! Silly girl!

Try to relax. Whatever it is, as long as it's not immediately life threatening, you and Nova have the power to cope, together.

Meanwhile, how is Princess Emmy doing?
