Hi,

We have Porthos on 2 x 400mg gabapentin 2 x per day at the moment for possible lung mets and pain. We started him on it last night.

He is still panting allot and seems really 'out of it' with his tongue lolling to the side.

He isnt very good with medication, whenever he has had a general anesthetic he is 'out of it' for a few days after.

He is around 46 kg.

Do you think the dose could be too high?

Thanks you,

Amanda & Porthos

That is not a high dose at all.  My 65# Pitt took 600 mg of gabapentin 3 times daily although I gradually worked her up to that dose over time.  Is he on any other meds?  Prednisone is often given for lung mets and panting is a very common side effect of that drug.

Hi Pam,

He isn't on prednisone yet, but I am looking in to it.

He is taking Meloxicam and im giving him Robitussin DM around once a day at the moment.

Our vet here said that ataxia is a side effect of gabapantine, do you think he will slowly get used to it or is this how he is going to be from now on?

Thanks Pam,

Amanda and Porthos

I rarely see that side effect but it is possible.  It should only last a few days but if it does occur I usually lower the dose to what the dog can tolerate and gradually work it up from there.
