Hi there,
Rani, my 8 years old ridgeback x had her hind leg amputated yesterday due to suspected osteosarcoma. She has walked around a bit and had some food and water which is great but has been peeing herself since we brought her home last night. We’ve taken her outside supported by a towel under her belly but she doesn’t want to pee outside. As soon as she’s laying on her bed, she goes and has been passing a lot of urine.
Any idea on whether this is post surgery/anaesthetic related? Will she work out how to pee?
Her vet practice is closed today so I have no one to ask.
This is all very overwhelming for us.
Thank you
Hi Mirka and Rani, welcome. Hopefully our fairy vet mother Dr Pam will see this and give her input soon.
In the meantime what pain medications is she on? How much, and how often? This early in recovery we've seen many members dogs do this usually just from being so out of it from the meds. Typically adjusting the dosages and timing will help get a dog a little more mobile. Definitely let your vet know what's going on so they can help.

Hi Jerry,
thank you for your response. Rani is doing much better today, she worked out how to pee on three legs and we’re so relieved!
She has a painkiller patch on her leg that slowly releases pain medication and this stays on for 3 days. Then we start giving her Gabapentin 300mg twice a day (is that enough?) and Meloxicam once a day.
She has a check up on Monday afternoon.
The wound seem quite red and parts of it quite puffy - is this normal?
She has been walking around a bit and is very interested in food which is great. She hates the e-collar so I wonder if the blow up version is better? She’s bumping into things so we take it off when we take her outside.
Any advice is appreciated, thank you.
Yay for a better day! Do you have a photo of the incision you can share? This is how adding images works, you need to host them somewhere like a Tripawds blog or Imgur.com, then copy/paste the image here.
Her gabapentin dosage is typical, sometimes breaking into 3x daily works better but don't change it unless you talks to your vet because she's showing pain signals .
The patch lasts 72 hours so you might start seeing pain signals then but hopefully not. Really great that her appetite is there!
