Hi -

My 3-legger, Rusty, had TPLO surgery on his only back leg about three years ago. Lately, we moved to a house with all hardwoods and have been trying to cover the floors in rugs, but of course he still slips now and then. His leg seems to be more painful lately and we've noticed a little limping. I took him to the vet today and the vet said his leg was fine - seems to be arthritis that's bothering him. He gave him an injection of Adequan and said we should get one every month. I was happy to know there is something that could give our sweet boy some relief. After I got home, I started researching Adequan some more and it seems like people usually start off with more frequent injections (twice a week for a couple of weeks?) before going to once a month doses. My question is: will starting off with once a month still help? I just want to make sure we're doing the best we can for Russ.

Thanks so much!

Yes it is standard to give an injection twice weekly for 1 month then give an injection every 2-4 weeks as maintenance.

Thanks, Pam. So does that mean the one we just gave him won't work as well unless we go back this ASAP for another?

It doesn't mean it won't work but it often takes time to build up in the system so you get quicker results by doing it more frequently.  I usually teach people how to give the injections and sell the whole bottle to save money.
