Sally - Shooter is staying at the vet's where they are keeping him quiet hoping the mouth will clot. It is a possibility he will need to stay overnight (will not be a happy dog).

How right you guys are that you need to get answers, but at the time I checked him out it was the tech and not a vet available and I just prefer to have the vet give me the answers. She did do that this morning. I guess he was very agitated coming out of the anesthesia and they were scared he was going to hurt himself so, therefore, the morphine.

I'll let everyone know more when I get some news.

Thanks for everything!

Spirit Shooter was a Miniature Australian Shepherd who was diagnosed with a MCT and had a LF amp 1/28/13 at 13-1/2 years old.

Shooter crossed the Bridge on 8/28/13, his 7 month ampuversary and two weeks from his 14th birthday.

Live and learn.. it can be a really crappy way to get through life, but with any luck you only learn a lesson once, and it stops a lot of 'new' lessons from occurring.

If TJ had to go to the vet for an abscessed tooth you can bet that I google the heck out 'canine tooth abscess' and learn as much as I can about it so I can ask about the problems (whatever they may be) that OTHERS have had.

This recently paid off from tripawds.com when I talked about TJs amp.. I said I wanted a fentanyl patch post op for pain and the vet tech was not sure... I made my request very clear that TJ is to be in no pain and that this patch is HIGHLY recommended (by all my tripawd.com fellow amp owners).   So THANKS GUYS!

I don't want to sound overbearing or like a know it all... but I'm not so stubborn that I won't learn from someone else's experiences.

It sucks that your hound will be away overnight... and I hope it turns out for the best... but you have to speak up for the hound.. if things are rushed, slow them down.  If a vet isn't available wait for one, if the vet tech can answer ok, but since they don't discount to prices for 'vet tech' care, I'd rather have the Vet do it.  Its not that I'm tight with money, but that I am tight with all my hound's care.

Good luck!!

How is Shooter this evening? Is he at the vet or did he get to come home?

Years ago our dog Belle had a soft tissue sarcoma near her shoulder and we had it biopsied. The biopsy ended up being way more traumatic than the surgical removal, and it was done at a teaching hospital. Belle was put on morphine for pain and she was out of her mind. We never knew what kind of dog she was but she looked like a white shepherd with a husky-ish coat. And she talked like a husky. She wah-wah-wah-ooo-ooo-ooohed half the night away and I was in tears.

Next morning I called our regular vet and he said "Oh, morphine mania. Come get some Deramaxx and Tramadol and quit the morphine." He knew exactly what it was. As soon as her system cleared a bit, she settled down and I stopped drinking. And crying.

And if you want to read a hilarious (because it's not your dog) story of a tooth removal, I have one on Dakota's blog. He and Evelyn bonked heads and one of his molars broke. Nice, hard bulldog head. Oh that was a fun-filled day. Not.

From abandoned puppy to Tripawd Warrior Dude, Dakota became one of the 2011 February Furballs due to STS. Our incredibly sweet friend lived with grace and dignity till he impulsively raced over the Bridge on 12-15-12.
