exclamation Congress is now in the final stages of reviewing the Stop Online Piracy Act. SOPA and its PROTECT IP act would give governments and corporations the power to take down entire websites over alledged infringing posts by users.

If Congress interferes with the architecture of the Internet by passing the deeply flawed SOPA, hundreds of thousands of jobs will be at risk. If SOPA becomes law, the government will have created America's first system for censoring the Internet.

Please take a few seconds to voice your concern and Help Stop American Censorship before it is too late!

Why this is important:

  • JOBS: America desperately needs jobs. If Congress interferes with the architecture of the Internet by passing the deeply flawed Stop Online Piracy Act, hundreds of thousands of jobs will be at risk.
  • CENSORSHIP: If the Stop Online Piracy Act becomes law, the government will have created America's first system for censoring the Internet. We cannot allow America to become like China where voices are censored without judicial oversight.
  • SECURITY: Our government’s own cyber-security research center asserted that SOPA could harm US security. Pirates will use more unlawful means and it will be even harder for law enforcement to catch and punish the bad guys.

So Imagine:

  • A Tripawds user posts a picture of their dog in a Jeep or other major brand vehicle with the logo showing.
  • Or, we post a video taken while a song was playing on the radio.
  • Or, a user unknowingly posts a funny copyrighted image in these forums.
  • Or, another member posts a comforting poem they found to help comfort someone coping with loss.
  • And this entire site gets shut down!
  • Don't laugh, under SOPA this is all possible.

Read how you can help here.

Do tell a friend, this is serious business. We shudder to think of how it could affect us here, with all of the videos, product shots, etc that we use. Ugh.

I agree with Admin wholeheartedly. No matter what side of the political spectrum you're on, this ill-conceived attempt at legislation is an attack on our fundamental first amendment rights. Part of what makes the internet such a dynamic place is the fact that there's not a lot of regulation - a prime example of the kind of success that's possible when government isn't involved.

There are already effective laws in place to deal with online piracy and copyright infringement, and they've been successfully used to curb websites engaged in those activities. We don't need more. I'm fortunate enough to live in an area represented by a congressman who opposes this bill. If your representative supports it or is on the fence, the time to contact them is now.

Scary. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Just emailed our rep.

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

Thanks for this information. I am in Canada, but I am concerned as the impact of laws do cross borders. Once I would have thought "don't be paranoid, sensible people are in control". But when I see little old grand mothers and little kids being searched in airport lineups I think the letter of the law is now extended to its ridiculous consequences, rather than its intent, spirit or purpose.

Thanks everyone. Let's keep it up! We just posted more about SOPA, here on our business website, with some more links to take action – including a Protect-IP petition to the State Department for anyone outside the U.S.

Watch this for more info about SOPA and Protect-IP, and what it's passage means to everyone:

Note the new Stop SOPA ribbon at the top right corner of every Tripawds blog and read this post about what we're doing here to show our solidarity during the internet strike on January 18th when thousands of sites will go dark in opposition of SOPA and PIPA:
