Dropped Gator off at his daycare yesterday for his first overnight boarding experience. My ex will be staying at my house, but with his two dogs and the fence down as it is being rebuilt, Gator was just too much.
He was apprehensive when I dropped him off, which made me feel horrible. I keep trying to remind myself that the goal is just for him to be safe and well cared for until I return. I leave this morning, very strange to sleep without him. And I am trying the think of the pro's - the biggest one is that the fence will be done by the time he comes home. He won't do business on a tie out, pooped on the lead for the first time ever after holding it for two days, and he doesn't do tree mail, so lots of walking back and forth by the hospital waiting for him to decide it is time. The only other pro I can think of is that he was a little bored after the kennel cough thing, which limited his walks and kept him home. This will give him lots of stimulation.
I keep hoping this is harder on me than on him. (No, the trip is not a pro - business trip, where I will spend all of my time in a hotel).
Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016. Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016. Lung mets August 25, 2016. Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016. Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.
Wherever they are, they are together.
And I should mention that this is trip 1 of 4 in the next 2 months - always my busy travel time.

I sure understand how apprehensive you are. A year and a half later, we still have not gone anywhere overnight without Ollie. Daycare is nonexistent where we live, so he hasn't done that, either. I know that there will be a time when it will be necessary, but so far it hasn't happened. The training center where we take Ollie for classes has a board and train option. That could be what we end up doing. He knows the people there and would be getting a good workout every day.
I'm sure that Gator will be pretty busy with all the things going on in daycare, and also very excited to see you when you come home. Keep thinking about how well Jasper Lily did when Alison was gone.
Kathi and the Turbotail April Angel...and the Labradork
Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!
UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!
Yes, it will be harder on you, but I do think he will be mighty, mighty glad ro see you And know that he CAN GO BACK HOOOOO !!!
Gstor is familiar with everybody so that's good.
But yeah, when he comes home with you to a fenced yard snd can poo with no leash....UTIPOIA!!! You Gator!''Cannyou keep a secret? Shhhhh......humans don t like to "poo" away from home either!! 🙂
Can't wait to hear abput the homecoming tomorrow....WITH PICS AND /OR VIDEO PLEASE! 🙂 🙂 🙂
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
Yep, definitely harder on you. Does your daycare have a website that you can see him while you're gone? I can't even imagine how hard it was for you to leave him there; when I go away (which is almost never) my boys stay at home with their dad (he doesn't get to come with me, me MUST be home with them) and it's all I can do to manage that. Think of the happy reunion and awesome fenced yard!
Paula and Nitro
Nitro 11 1/2 yr old Doberman; right front amp June 2014. Had 6 doses carboplatin, followed by metronomic therapy. Rocked it on 3 legs for over 3 years! My Warrior beat cancer, but couldn't beat old age. He crossed the Bridge peacefully on July 25, 2017, with dignity and on his terms. Follow his blog entitled "Doberman's journey"
"Be good, mama loves you".....run free my beautiful Warrior
Yup, definitely harder on the humans, like a lot of things. I'll bet Gator was feeling your emotions, thus the reluctance. And I'll bet by now he's playing and romping!

Coming off a week away from the sidekick, I definitely get it! But as others have said, worse on you than him. And he likes his daycare, right? It's like a mini vacation for him and the reunion will be that much sweeter!!! Hugs!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
Yup definitely harder on you than Gator. But just think ahead to the epic reunion you will have. When you think about it if we can lop a leg off them and they spend usually at least one overnight away and they still love us this should be a piece of cake. After this first time Gator will know you're returning for him so your upcoming trips should be easier on him. Please let us know how the reunion goes. 😀
I am sitting in the Miami airport waiting for my flight to board, but Gator is home!!! My ex went to pick him up so we could be together tonight, instead of Gator having to stay another night because of how late I get home. I wish I could have seen his reaction to the new fence, but really glad he will be there when I get there.

Sometimes ex- husbands can be a good thing! This is case in point!!
I'm so glad you and Mosby will be together tonight! 🙂 🙂 🙂 Best night's sleep ever!! 🙂
You'll get to see him enjoy his fence over and over, no worries! 🙂

WOW that is really nice! I can only imaging how overjoyed you were on that flight back. Can't wait to see the photos.

Good deed by the ex - I am so happy you and Gator will both be home together tonight!

On October 27, 2016, nearly 6 months after amputation, and 18 months since his cancer likely started, we lost Pofi to a recurrence of Soft Tissue Sarcoma in his spine quite suddenly. His canine sister also succumbed to cancer on March 1, 2019 - we lavished her with our love in the interim, but life was never quite the same without her only real canine friend. Cliff kitty had to leave us, too, suddenly, in August 2019. Lucia kitty grieved all these losses, but helped us welcome two new Lurchers into our home and our lives, Shae and Barley.
What a great group effort! I'm sure Gator was really, really to see his Mom tonight. So nice to see exes get along so well.

What a great ex. My neighbor wouldn't even do that for me OR barely walks Jasper when I am in a bind and we've never had a relationship! I can't wait to hear how the reunion went!
