Hi all,

I was sharing some ice cream with Tani in honor of  her birthday and this question came to mind:

Do dogs get brain freeze?

Scientifically it is known as sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia.

I haven't a clue Karen!  But I've wondered the same thing when I give my dog's ice cream - cause they eat it soooo fast - I tell them you're gonna get a headache! oh-my

Great Question! If we don't hear from Pam, we may move this to the Ask a Vet forum. Or, you might want to PM tazziedog with a link to this topic. Thanks!

I have never noticed this with my dogs but I suppose you would have to ask them!  If they ate a large enough amount very quickly it is certainly possible.

I saw the topic and thought, "Oh no! What does Tani have?!".

Giggles is right!  I'm gonna vote, Yes!   I've seen Comet pause while eating something frozen!  It was just for a few seconds.

But if we are into asking silly questions to the Vet...I have one!

Why is it that we measure medicine by a dog's weight but as humans we don't?  Think about it.  I've never heard my doctor say, you weigh this - therefore you can take this much medicine!

Dogs have such a variety of sizes that med dosages must be estimated on body weight.  Giant breeds are better dosed on body surface area (measured in meters squared) vs a mg/kg basis.  The trend in human medicine is actually changing to dose women and smaller people differently than the rest of the population.  Many people are able to take lower doses of meds like blood pressure or thyroid pills because not everyone has the same metabolism.  Personally I think that sometimes veterinarians are a little ahead of what human medicine is able to do and we focus more on prevention but I am biased :).

I was worried about Tani, too!  But what a good question... of course now that Holly has a competitor in the house she can't eat her frozen treats slowly anymore.

And as a petite person, I've always wondered about human dosages... why do I take the same amount as my husband who weighs almost 50% more than I do?  Thanks for letting us know that human docs may finally be catching up to vets, Pam!

Holly joined the world of tripawds on 12/29/2009. She has a big little sister, Zuzu, who idolizes Holly and tries to make all of her toys into tripawds in Holly's honor. And she's enjoying life one hop at a time!

Whoa. That topic heading freaked me out for a moment thinking that something was wrong with Tani.

There's an actual scientific term for brain freeze? Sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia??? They should put that on ice cream containers - Warning: May cause sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia. Sweet. 🙂

I've never heard my doc say that either. Actually, I'm relieved. If dosage went by weight my medication would cost a lot more money that they do already.
