Was reading through some posts today where folks were discussing what happens to the legs that are amputated from our friends. Hard to think about, but is a genuine question we all have. I don't know if I have shared this with this group or not, but maybe you can see the humor from the eyes of a little boy...
When Calpurnia had her amputation 3 years ago, our friend's son, Jeff, was 5 years old. Jeff had just lost his two pet huskies, and was very close with our dogs, including Calpurnia. When his family came to visit several days after Cali's amputation, we talked with him before hand so he knew that Cali would have a big scar, shaved shoulder, and only 3 legs. It didn't seem to upset him to see her, and the evening was pretty uneventful.
About a year later, we were visiting Jeff's family when out of the blue he asks (as 6-yr olds do) "where did the leg go?" At first we had no idea what he was talking about - he was watching TV. Finally he said "Calpurnia - where did her leg go?" I explained the leg had gotten sick and was hurting her, so the doctors thought it was best to take it off so it didn't hurt anymore, etc. Jeff asks again "but where did it GO?" So I tried telling him it went to be studied by doctors and students so that maybe they could understand more about cancer in dog legs, and ultimately it was probably cremated. "But WHERE did it GO?" Well, where do you go from there with someone else's 6 yr old. Finally we all decided it probably went to heaven and when Cali is done here it will be waiting for her so she can run on 4 legs again. End of discussion... NOT.
Last winter, another of our dogs, Liam, had to have an eye removed due to glaucoma. The surgery went smoothly and Liam is no longer in pain and doing very well. Jeff's take on this was "well, God must be making a new dog with all the parts!"
So we laughed long and hard about this strange looking "dog" with Cali's front leg, Liam's eye, and 50 million testicles stuck all over from dogs being neutered!
Ok, now THAT is funny!
Testicle dog....heeee heeeeee!!!!!!!
Thanks for the humor, I LOVE it!

I love the story...out of the mouths of babes! I remember taking Paris out after the snow melted and a little girl in my neighborhood came running to meet us with horror on her face. Before I could explain what happened, she asked Did Paris' leg fall off??!!
It is best to have some humor when dealing with something so serious...only way to get through it!!
