Oh no David! Maybe he just tweaked something. I sure hope he is ok, will be looking to see how you made out at the vets. Keeping fingers, toes, paws, and tails crossed for you!!

Sorry to hear this! Hoping for more optimism from your regular vet - in my experience, ER vets can be Debbie Downers, painting the bleakest picture ever. Sending pawsitivity your way!

Paula and Warrior Angel Nitro

Nitro 11 1/2  yr old Doberman; right front amp June 2014. Had 6 doses carboplatin, followed by metronomic therapy. Rocked it on 3 legs for over 3 years! My Warrior beat cancer, but couldn't beat old age. He crossed the Bridge peacefully on July 25, 2017, with dignity and on his terms.  Follow his blog entitled "Doberman's journey"

Oh gosh David!!  And always in the middle of the night when the regular Vets are closed!

I agree with Paula, ER docs can do a great job of alarming and painting  horrible pictures.

Glad you are going to your regular Vet.  Update when you can catch your breath.  Cheering for sweet Baxter❤

Thanks for the well wishes.

Paula, you were right. Baxter's regular vet was more optimistic than the ER.

I did have them do X-Rays. They showed he does have a narrow disc in his back. For now, his vet wants to treat it conservatively with rest, anti-inflammatories and pain meds. No stairs, no jumping on furniture and the vet specifically said "no chasing squirrels."

It's probably something we'll just have to deal with from time to time. If Baxter twists or torques this back just right, it's liable to flare up. If it becomes a bigger issue, we'll look into a CT scan and possibly surgery down the line. But his vet said he's not ready to go down that path yet.

As an aside, the specialist who would do the hypothetical scan/surgery is the same one who did Rocky's biopsy/amputation. So we'd be in good hands if it did get that far.

Oh whew, that's really not awful news! I know he likes his squirrels but i know you too, lol 🤣

Glad you went to your regular vet. You now have sound advise from somebody you trust.

It's always something, isn't it? Sending you guys hugs and please give Baxter extra belly rubs!

Good luck with 'splainin' to Baxter he can't jump up on the couch!  And worse yet, can't chase squirrels!!!  Wouldn't  want to be there for that conversation!

Your Bet has a good handle on things.  I do believe his approach will be exactly what Baxter needs, and certainly  not the dire prognosis the ER Vet gave!

Baxter, tell your Dad to  cut the legs off the sofa so it's  lower and easier for you  to step up on it!😎😎😎

Thanks for updating.

He's been really good so far. I pulled my sleeping bag and spare comforter out and put it on the living room floor near his dog bed. We napped together for a while and now he's resting on my makeshift bed instead of the couch.

But so far he hasn't tried to get on the couch. I may let him get up there since it's relatively low to the ground and he tends to pull himself up by his front legs when his back isn't feeling good. The bed is a definite no-no.

The vet said he could go on short walks, so I took him around the block. Of course, we saw rabbits. I had to hold him back, so I think he's feeling better. But he's on meds/rest for a couple of weeks until a recheck. I am a bit nervous that that disc is going to get narrower and become a bigger problem down the road, but his vet didn't seem overly concerned. At least we have the X-ray now as a baseline for how it looks.

Next week will be Rocky's two-year ampuversary (Two years! That's crazy!). That's the last time I had a "bed" in my living room, so it's kind of strange having my sleeping bag/comforter out there again.

Awww Baxter, you sure are getting good care.❤ You look so comfy on your "makeshift" bed.

No chasing squirrels for awhile Baxter!!   It is a good sign that you are feeling  much better though 😎

Good idea to get those baseline xrays. Baxter may, or may not, have more flare-ups.  You have a good management plan in place that, as you can already tell from this 'episode", helps him heal.

Alway, always, always, cheering for this special  boy.

PS.  Two years for Rocky' anniversary???  It really doesn't  seem possible!  Valentine's  Day.....❤

Ohhh wow OK just catching up. A narrow disc eh? Is there a name for the condition? Just curious.

Baseline x-rays are exactly what we did for Wyatt Ray two years ago when his arthritis started bothering him. Those x-rays came in handy for his most recent arthritis related surgery. Good idea to do them.

Did the vet mention if pet steps are OK to train Baxter to use? I do like his conservative approach for now. You're such a good advocate for Baxter I have total confidence that if he needs to return for more diagnostics, you'll make sure the vets find a way to get them done and create a more specific treatment plan.

His vet just called it a narrow disc, but in doing some Google research it looks like it's probably Degenerative Lumbosacral Stenosis. It's fairly common in German Shepherds, and Baxter definitely has some sort of Shepherd in him.

This is an X-ray from the link and not from Baxter, but his X-ray looks somewhat similar to this. You can see where the arrow is pointing is narrower than the other discs.

In addition to the back pain, it can cause lameness in the rear legs. Fortunately, Baxter hasn't had any issues walking. His vet said he'd be more concerned if Baxter was having trouble walking. I think that's part of the reason we're taking a conservative approach.

We didn't talk about pet steps, although Baxter would probably just ignore them if I did get some. I'll probably need to limit his jumping on/off the bed going forward, but I think most activities can be resumed in a couple of weeks. We go back to the vet then just to make sure everything is going well.

I did find a supplement for discs that people raved about in the reviews. I forwarded it to his vet to see if that's something that maybe can help Baxter avoid issues going forward.

Nitro had a narrowing of his spinal cord in his hind end...spinal stenosis I think it was called. Other than his Adequan injections and chiro and acupuncture, we didn't really do anything for it - not sure anything could be done.

I’ve got good news and bad news.

Good news: Baxter is clearly feeling much better.

Bad news: Baxter is clearly feeling much better. And he has some pent-up energy. He’s confined to the living/dining rooms, but I’ve already had to stop him from running laps twice.

BAXTER!  WAY TO FAST FORWARD YOUR RECOVERY!!😁😁😁

I hink this is GOOD NEWS, and more GOOD NEWS!!!!  😎😎Okay, I know you shouldn't be running an in-house marathon  yet , but it sure is a good sign that, with minimal "conservative" treatment you are feeling that good!!!

So happy to read this!!!!   I know you are quite relieved  too!!

And I just made the mistake of letting him out in the backyard without a leash. As soon as I opened the door, he took off running and did laps around the yard. He stopped, pooped and ran back in before I could get out there with his leash.

He’s clearly feeling good, but I don’t need him overdoing it. I did set up the crate if needed.

Oh. His vet said it wouldn’t hurt to give him the disc supplement I found online. So I’m going to order that and see if that can help prevent future flare-ups.
