My cat is just a year old he got hit by a car in the middle of the night. Then crawled his way all the way back to our door. We took him to the vet he said if he survives(eats, drinks, and goes to the bathroom normally) through the weekend at home we could take him in on Monday to get his back leg amputated. His growth plate was too damaged to heal on its own and his leg was mangled other than that he was healthy. He came home the day of the surgery which is today. He's already eating, he went pee(after a lot of struggling), he has a soft cone on, he's had his pain medication. I just can't help but worry cause he seems aggravated all the time. He will toss around and make noises frequently. Then just stare at the floor for a while then repeat and whenever I try to pet him or help him he "yells" at me. Am I doing something wrong, is there something else I can do to help, is what he's doing normal, and should I tell the vet about his behavior. Any help would be amazing cause god knows I don't know what I'm doing.

Hi Shellia,

I'm sorry about your kitty, poor guy. What a luck cat that he survived!

Can you tell us exactly what pain medication he is on, the dosage and how often? What you are describing sounds like pain signals . The cone of shame doesn't help of course, many cats freak out with it on and act in ways that you describe. But don't take it off yet! The cone is a necessary part of recovery but there are cone alternatives like the VetMedWear Surgical Suit.

Anytime you are deeply concerned about his behavior please call your vet asap. We are not vets here and can only share our experiences, so it's always best to let your vet team know what's happening.

In the meantime be sure to check out our Tripawds What to Expect articles and Cool Tips for Tripawd Cats for everything you need to know about caring for an ampute cat.

All the evidence says that the first week or two can be awful, but in the vast majority of cases it gets much better quite quickly.

He has had an awful shock, his body (and not just his leg) has been traumatised, but there is every hope it will get much better in a matter of days.

Just hang in there, give him what you can both physically and emotionally and there is every hope that despite the awful present you and he will have a happy future.
