My 12 year old cat has Hemangioscarcoma. The tumor is on her back right leg. The recommendation is to have it amputated. We are currently scheduled with her regular vet to have surgery on 10/24, that's a little over 3 weeks away and I'm very anxious about waiting because this cancer is so aggressive. There is another vet, they are well regarded and we know people who take their animals there, who can do the surgery tomorrow but they do not provide over night stays. They want us to drop her off for surgery at 730 am, then they will keep her until 6-7pm.
I'm torn between waiting to surgery done with overnight care and acting quickly because of the nature of her cancer.
Has anyone brought their baby home same day as amputation surgery? Is this a terrible idea?
Welcome, Jennifer. Your future posts will not require approval.
I'm sorry to hear about your cat's diagnosis. What's her name?
I know we have had some members bring their pet home the same day of surgery. My understanding is that first night can be rough, but it gets better. I'm not sure there is a wrong answer here - just whatever option you feel better about.
Wow a cat with hemangiosarcoma? That's pretty rare as far as I know, I'm sorry you guys are dealing with this.
It's not impossible to bring a cat home the same day of surgery, many people who have no other choice in vet practices will bring their pets home same day. That's better than leaving them alone in the clinic overnight. But it's also not easy. This is major surgery, the biggest there is pretty much. Cats can be difficult patients as it is, and this surgery makes them very dysphoric and challenging to care for. If that second clinic can refer you to a 24/hour clinic that you can move her to for overnight monitoring, that would be ideal.
What is the other practice? Can you share their URL? And how does their service level compare with the other clinic? Is that one a specialty center? You really want to make sure that any practice you go to has the most current surgical and anesthesia protocols to handle a surgery like this, as well as licensed vet techs who will be caring for her.
Curious what you decided, let us know!
Thanks you guys. Her name is Discovery; my husband has an obsession with Volcanos and all cats have been named after Volcanos..
News is, her regular vet had a cancelation and was able to get us in for surgery today! They are amazing and will keep her 1-3 nights depending on how she does.
With this surgery were about $6500 into treatment and pretty well tapped out financially. So, now I'm on the hunt for any charitable organizations that may be able to contribute so she can get Chemo.
FANTSTIC! That's awesome Discovery (love the name theme!) gets to go to her usual spot. I was hoping that would happen for you guys. The stars aligned!
Paws crossed for a speedy recovery. Be sure to check out our Tripawds Recovery Shopping List , the How to Help Your Three Legged Cat book and our Trikitties posts for some pointers.
