Andi is 8 months old and just went through her second amputation surgery on the same leg. She had a left front amputation done at four months old and the Dr left a nub. She recovered great until the other night when we noticed bone coming through the skin. She had to have the rest of the leg removed including scapula. She's a trooper, doing great.[Image Can Not Be Found]
Aww poor Andi! I'm so glad she's doing better. That seems to be par for the course when it comes to partial amputations. Leaving a stump is good when a prosthesis is in an animal's future, but otherwise we've seen more pets with partial amputations go through "amputation corrections" more often than not.

Recovery is going really well. She has a special angel at the Rainbow bridge that helps her through, my daughter is Cassie and she owned Domino. I adopted Andi because she lost the same leg and almost the same way so it seemed fitting, almost like he was coming back in feline form.
YOU ARE CASSIE'S MOM AND DOMINO'S GRANDMA!!! WOW!!!! WE LOVE THEM BOTH DEARLY!!!!❤❤❤ I've had the pleasure of meeting Cassie and Domino (amd Finn and all the crew!) several times at Virginia Tripawd Pawties! And it's an honor to meet you now too!!
And absolutely Domino is a great Angel to watch over Andi. Clearly he sent Andi to you❤
Sorry she has to go through this, but it is the best thing for her in the long run. She'll adjust once recovery is done.
You already have insight I to what this joirney is all about, but let is know how recovery is going and If you have any questions . Can't wait to see pics.
And PLEASE give our love to Cassie. She certainly gave Domino the best life a dog could ever have❤

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
Oh my gosh we are such huge fans of Angel Domino. Cassie was such a great mom to him. We were so heartbroken when he passed, but no doubt he is here guiding sweet Andi. What a lucky kitty to have you as her pawrent.
Did you ever see the wonderful information Cassie and Domino gathered for us in these Tripawds Rehabilitation Therapy videos with Dr. Kennedy? We are so grateful for the effort she made to do these for the community.

I did see the work with Dr Kennedy, I actually was with her and Domino when she went to see her. Ya'll have been such a blessing in Cassie's life as she went through Domino's heartbreaking diagnosis and passing. We miss him terribly.
She still lived at home when she got him after his amputation so he was so so dear to me too.
I'm looking forward to helping Andi on her journey on 3 legs.

So I came home yesterday to a kitten that had gotten her shirt most of the way off and had been scratching her incision(it was bleeding). Scared me to death, but everything seems ok. I had to find her extra shirt and had to modify it on the sewing machine, I hope I have solved the problem, but now I'm terrified to leave her alone when I go to work.
I have also noticed that she walks different after the second surgery. When she had part of her leg left (the nub), if she walked real slow, she would lean way down in the front, now she doesn't do that anymore, hmmmm, wonder if she was still trying to walk on the missing leg.

I did not have any problems with Purrkins getting out of his, but I have heard off of a few that have. The size may be too big not sure what you have. Did they send you home with a cone? I hate to say it but when you are not home that is the only way you know she won't get to the incision. You don't want her licking or chewing or scratching that incision and messing up stitches or staples & causing an infection. They can cause damage so quickly.

Oh yes, you bet she was using her nub that is why they cause issues and the entire leg needed to go. She will hop when she walks now. She will figure out her new body and thrive after recovery.
Also is she on pain meds?

As Holly said, Andi will adjust. It's a whole different recovery without the nub, after having used the nub. She'll figure it out.

Oh that crazy cat! That would have scared me too.
You can also try putting something like Microcyn on the wound (ask your vet first) to keep it from drying out and becoming itchy.
And there's also the Suitcal, and I think that there is one available in the Angel Exchange too!

Thanks everyone for the information. She is on pain meds still, tomorrow will be her 1 week ampuversary. She has 1 more day on pain meds. She came home with a cone but that doesn't prevent her scratching it. Cassie said she's in the itchy part of recovery now. I think we're good with the modifications I made to the shirt. I think I just had it a little too loose.
Andi has her own bedroom, so today while I worked I left her in her room, not with her 4 other brothers and sisters. Yep I'm a crazy cat lady, we have 5 total with Andi. She was good when I got home, no scratching, shirt still on.
I hope I'm doing this posting right, I'm a little technically challenged so y'all be patient with me and let me know if I'm doing it wrong or doing something stupid.

Yea, they go thru an itchy stage. I used a damp washcloth around the incision that helped. Glad to hear the modifications worked that's great news!

Hey Mom!! And hey little sister Andi!!
Thanks everyone for welcoming my mom and Andi with open arms, and I apologize for my recent absence.
To give a tad more back story on Andi, she was brought into the clinic I work out after being found as a stray. They believe she had gotten her leg caught in something and just like Domino she had permanent nerve damage. She was dragging her leg and chewing on it very badly. The amazing family that found her took great care of her for a couple of weeks and then even paid for her initial amputation even though they knew they weren't going to keep her. They came to pick her up the day after surgery and I of course had fallen in love with her during her vet stay (this was only about 2 weeks before Domino's passing). The family happily let me take her home with me to foster her and find her an awesome Tripawd savvy home. My mom had just lost a cat due to a tragedy, and of course wanted to come see the new foster baby. She fell in love when she met her. I kept Andi until she was healed from her surgery, and after her stitches came out my mom took her home!! I think my mom has found her heart cat, Andi means the world to her and my step father. I knew my mom would be an amazing Tripawd mom, and that Andi was meant to find her. The second surgery was an unfortunate necessity. Luckily her surgeon was amazing, and I assisted with the surgery. It was a short procedure, only about an hour and a half. So far her recovery is going great!
I'm so excited that I got my mom to join this site!! I can't wait to see Andi love life on three legs!!

Domino had his left front leg amputate on May 13th 2014 after being hit by a car. He's now living a happy healthy life on three legs :)
