Small Cat, Big Comeback: Mochi’s Life on Three Legs

Mochi shocked everyone when she bounced back from amputation without missing a beat—sprinting out of her carrier for snacks and quickly returning to her favorite activities like playing fetch, watching YouTube birds, and perching on the tub ledge. This joyful story from her mom Cheyenne in Wisconsin shows just how fearless and fabulous life on three legs can be!

Tripawd Tuesday Q&A: Mochi’s Story

How old is your Tripawd?

When and why did your Tripawd lose a leg?

She lost her leg Nov 2024, right after she turned 1, due to a vaccine induced fibrosarcoma.

How did your Tripawd adapt to life on three? Did the reality match your expectations?

We brought her home from surgery- she was still sedated in her carrier until her automatic feeder went off- she sprinted out of her carrier and hopped to the bowl! We were so shocked. She wasn’t even phased.

What are your Tripawd’s favorite things to do?

Play fetch, be held, play, watch birds on YouTube, cuddle, drink water out of the faucet, stand on the bathtub ledge when we shower.

What is the biggest lesson you learned from your Tripawd so far?

How adaptable animals are- we were so incredibly stressed and sad for her, but she wasn’t even phased!

What is your best advice to someone who is about to go through amputation with their pet, or someone who is thinking of adopting a Tripawd?

When they first have surgery using the litter box is the hardest adaptation. Put a puppy pad in the litter box with a very thin layer of litter over it; this will help provide traction so they don’t slip. We only did this for about a week until she built up enough strength, you can remove the puppy pad and gradually increase the litter as they adapt.
