It has been a month now since Sadie’s surgery. She is a ten month old golden doodle who was hit by a car and her left front leg was amputated. She has adjusted very well and I am handling it so much better as well.
I believe Sadie is experiencing phantom pains overnight. She wakes up with a quick Yelp then cries for just a few minutes. I was prescribed trazadone to help her sleep after the surgery and I am continuing that right now. I was also given gabapentin for the nerves but that has ran out.
I would be interested to hear what type of meds if any are commonly given to pets that have had an amputation.

Sorry to hear Sadie is uncomfortable but glad you two are holding your own. Gabapentin and Traz may not be enough if the pain wasn't addressed before, during and immediately post op. Oh one more thing: gabapentin should not be suddenly stopped, it's recommended that dogs and cats are gradually weaned off of it. The pain of a sudden withdrawal can cause "rebound pain." Normally most pets are on pain meds for 10-14 days after surgery and sometimes longer.
