Yesterday afternoon we adopted our new dog Stella, she is a 6 year old (ish) springer spaniel and is so loving. I would like some help from people on the forum as she is missing her left front leg and has been since she was 6mnths old but she is not in good condition and only able to walk for about 10 minutes so she has come to us for pallative care and any advice would be most welcome. We have other dogs, cat and hens here too so its a busy household for her to get used too.

Jess sat up and Stella led down

(hope you don't mind I moved your post here, but I thought it would be more appropriate since we're talking about hopping around).

Awww what a sweetie she is! Congratulations! Bless you for bringing a Tripawd into your life, you won't regret it superstar

If at all pawsible, I would get her evaluated by a certified canine rehabilitation therapist who has experience with rehabbing Tripawds. The link has information about how to find one and where.

But it that isn't an option for you, I would recommend gentle stretching and strengthening exercises. Sounds like she's never gotten any kind of care like this before? If that's the case, start slow and take it easy. Here's a good video about strengthening and stretching. And when she's tired, massage is always a good idea. Check out our Fitness page in our Gear Blog for more tips.

She'll be working hard trying to catch up with the rest of your pack, so keep an eye on her to make sure she doesn't overdo it and hurt herself.

Welcome to the Tripawd Nation! We're glad to have you and look forward to following along with her adventures at your zoo big-grin

Thank you, Stella is 6 years old and has pink pads on her feet, and her coat is heavy on one side she has not been walked so we are starting with just 10 minutes morning and night. She was spayed on tuesday so we have to be careful of that too. We have no history of her but she has no wound from loosing her leg it is well healed but her remaining leg is talapesed (bent inwards) to support her so she is walking very very poorly - your videos and links are very welcome

Looks like a wonderful "menagerie" of furry and feathered friends.  There are lots of folks here who can be of assistance, welcome aboard!

I couldn't begin to say how special Sammy is to us.  Living and laughing with and loving this wonderful boy is priceless.

Oh what fun! You've got a great pack there.

I looked at the Canine Rehab Institute website and they list one person in the U.K.

David Prydie, BVMS, Cert SAO, CCRT, MRCVS
Hillside Veterinary Centre
146 Crewe Rd
Nantwich, Cheshire CW5 6NB
United Kingdom

Phone: 01279 625310
Fax: 01270 610999

The school is also starting a certification program in Glasgow, you may want to contact them to ask if they can put you in touch with therapists in your part of the world, I'll bet they can.

Love those pics!

Thank  you Jerry and everyone, I need lots of help, Stella needs to learn to walk outside and I need to ensure that I cause no damage to her. We will be assessed again tomorrow by the rescue people to make sure they feel she is happy with us and I will pass on the address of the canine therapist to them. Stella has a long road ahead of her and she needs to learn to be a dog not a caged animal she was previously.

Her amputated leg was taken off a long time ago but I need to start from scratch with her, your blogs etc are really useful and very humbling
