Hello, I am no stranger to the tripawd. We lost our doberman girl to osteosarcoma in 2012, but we had almost two good years with year as a tripawd!
We are looking at a tripawd rescue, border collie, amped as a puppy. He is 6. What kind of damage is going on with the hopping, is there going to be significant troubles with with remaining leg joints after all this time?
Hi Emily and welcome. Your future posts won't require moderation so thanks for registering as a member.
You are definitely experienced with being a Tripawd pawrent, thank you for thinking of adopting this pup! Sounds like he's a rear legger eh? Well, from what we've been told, rear-leggers have it a little better over time than front-leggers but they all end up compensating in some sort of way, which results in more susceptibility to osteoarthritis. Our own Wyatt Ray was amped at 8 months at is almost 6, and he shows no signs of slowing down but we are prepared for it.
The good news is that there is lots you can do to help this pup stay fit and strong, such as:
- keeping his body weight lower than the average dog of his size/breed
- focus on fun games and activities that tire his mind over his body
- keep his core muscles strong with fitness and conditioning routines
Our e-book, Loving Life on Three Legs, was written just for people and dogs in this situation. If you're able to download it you'll find lots of great tips. Also, our upcoming Tripawds Condtioning Course will happen in February, we hope you can join us online, it'll be lots of fun! Oh last thing, do check out our Tripawds Gear blog which features lots of helpful articles about staying fit, like the interview series we just posted with Dr. Kennedy & Domino, you'll love it!
Glad you're here, we hope you adopt this boy.
