Just catching up with hunky, handsome Bentley's story....... wow, what a great looking pup he is !! I don't have much more advice than everyone here has already given, and you have been given excellent advice by all.
I do know that getting through the recovery and recuperation period after amp surgery does have its ups and downs with most pups and kitties.....My Polly got through everything actually extremely well, but it can be a bit more difficult for other pups. Just hang in there and keep loving on Bentley, and know that you are doing your absolute best for him. He will get past the worst of it, and be back to himself in no time.
Thinking of you and him,

Is Bentley's local vet the same person that did the amp surgery? With Leland we were referred to an orthopedic surgeon who did the TPLO procedure to fix the knee and who ultimately did the amputation. We have a local vet that saw Leland as well and who provided me with plenty of Gabapentin without giving me the 3rd degree.
If you're not feeling comfortable with the treatment Bentley is receiving from the doctor's office that did the amputation perhaps the local vet would be more willing to prescribe him some extra pain meds (if your situation was like mine and Leland's). I'm just totally dumbfounded by what you said regarding getting extra pain medication only if there was an infection...

May you finally be healthy and running free at the Rainbow Bridge. Until we meet again my sweet boy!
His local vet is the one who did the surgery, and ive always trusted them because they're the best in town and they always treat him with so much love and care. Which is why I hate to question them it just makes me so nervous after seeing how long everyone else's pet was on their pain pills. I think I'm going to try and ween him off the few pills we have left and take it from there. I just feel like it so ridiculous that he would have to have an exam before he can get more if he needs it, so I want to have a few pills incase he is still in pain.
Hmmm. Well, many vets who aren't up on the latest pain management protocols don't get it, and thus their staff doesn't either. However, what could be happening here is that they are hesitant to prescribe more via phone out of fear that the pain meds might be getting abused by the pet parents. Not necessarily you, but clients in general. A while back one member in England reported that their vet was the same way, very tight with the pain meds because they lived in a high crime area known for drug use. So.....while I think it's dumb dumb dumb that they want him to show signs of pain before prescribing (it's so much harder to reduce pain than to prevent it), I'll give your vet the benefit of the doubt and assume that's the reason why. I would ask them to waive the office visit fee, after all that you've paid for the surgery.

And by the way, never, ever feel badly about questioning your vet (Dr. Nancy Kay does a great job teaching us how to be good advocates in Speaking for Spot). Only you know Bentley better than anyone else, he counts on you to advocate for him.

And the poor guy has his jaw wired shut as well as major surgery for amputation! Grrrrr.....That vet's pain policy needs to be updated!!
Ask him how he would like to jave these types of surgeries and not nave any pain meds after five/seven days! He probably be on a morphine drip for weeks!!
And.....most give the Rimadyl (anti flammatory) for about two weeks too.
As Laurie said...advocate! Especially with the risk of ice and snow.

He's been getting his pain meds every 8 hrs instead or every 4, since were trying to ween him off of them. He seems to be doing really well, he hasn't exhibited any signs of pain. So, so far so good. I bought him a months prescription of cosequin (anti inflamitory) but they said not to give that to him until he's done with his other meds. He did throw up a little bit this morning, but everything I've read online leads me to believe that's from the change of diet he's been going threw this past week. He has a few pain pills left, so hopefully those will be enough. I just keep checking on him to make sure he's not in pain.
You're doing a good job! Glad he seems to be handling things well!
Give yourself a hug...you've earned it! Really, do it now! Wrap your arms around yourself and tell yourself what a good job you are doing caring for Jojo! Yeah....that's it...that's a good hug!!!

Sure sounds like he's holding his own. Yeah the diet could definitely cause stomach upset.
I hope tomorrow is even better! Keep us posted.

Were going on a little over 24 hours since Bentley has had a pain pill and he seems to be doing fantastic! He hasn't seemed to be in any pain, and as far as I've seen he seems to be back to the normal Bentley. He even tried to chase the lazer pointer with the cat last night, he just seems to have his sparkle back. Now were only 4 days away from his 2 week check up where hopefully he'll get his staples out. Yay!
Thank you again for all the advice and support, we greatly appreciate it.
Hugs from Bentley joe and mom
