Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Thank you everyone :)

Did anyone else's dog pant fairly heavly after surgery for a few days? Bentley seems to be panting so heavy today, I can't figure out if he's hot or in pain. Just wondering if anyone had any advice?

Karen thank you! Yes, we were traveling to a big family event this weekend. Now that it's over I was so hoppy to see Bentley's photo. Gorgeous!

Definitely. A few factors play into that. 1) weather -- is it hot / warm where you are? 2) it's really hard work to get around on three legs when you're new at it 3) pain medication can do that as well, either too much or too little. Finding the right balance of pain meds and limiting his activity to the very bare minimum right now will help. What's his activity level like? He might be overdoing things for now.

Thank you!

It's actually snowing right now where we are so it's quite cold out. He just keeps wanting to go outside and eat the snow! This is his favorite weather. Also he is so determined and wanting to get up and go out and just stretch him legs, every once and awhile he wants to run though. I do feel like he could be overdoing it a little bit still. His pain seems to be under control since we've brought him home, except he seemed a little more sore today. It seems like everyone says he will have his good and bad days so I'm trying not to worry, I just want to make sure the poor guy isn't in any pain.

Sure!

It's hard to be the activity cop isn't it?! Totally understand. It takes getting used to.

During the first few weeks after surgery, activity should be kept to a bare minimum. yeah, they start to go stir crazy, which is when Interactive games come in handy. It's more effective and exhausting to wear out their brains, and less stress on the body too.

If you're at all in doubt about his pain medication schedule or quantity, let your vet know. Most dogs are on meds for about 10 days then gradually tapered off.

So hard! He wants to be so active and I have to tell him to take it easy sometimes. We actually bought a couple of puzzles for him today to try and keep him entertained, poor guy can't play with his toys either for awhile because of his jaw so he's really bored!

That was actually another thing I wanted to ask about! They only sent him home with 7 days worth of pain meds and I feel like after the trauma from the accident and the two surgeries he's going to be hurting longer than that.

Glad to hear he's getting his slarkle back!

Yeah, worrying is what we do really well here! Recovery is just plain scary to us humans!

I would indeed ask your vet about another week's supply of pain meds! .ost dogs..not all.. our on lain meds for the first two weeks. My Happy Hannah, "plus size model Bull Mastiff, stayed on them for three weeks! You can probably taper off some going into the second week...maybe.

The panting could be everything Jerry said. I know, confusing little guessing game we go through, huh? My first inclination would be it's a sign of pain. Overall he seems to be doing really well. Just keep the pain meds consistent so it doesn't get too far "ahead". It's harder to "catch up" with pain meds once the pain meds once it gets going.

YOU ARE DOING A GREAT JOB!!!!!! Hang in there.....the ups and downs turn into all ups pretty soo ! Promise!!!!

Sending lots of hugs and a big smooch for Mr. Handsome!

Well I just got off the phone with his vet and they said he can't have anymore pain meds unless he's exhibiting pain once we run out. And then we have to take him in for another check up before they can prescribe more. I just hope he isn't in pain because then he'll have to wait til we can get into the vet. Oh this worries me :( the last thing I want is for him to be in any pain.

I'm just catching up and saw the beautiful picture of Bentley...he's such a handsome fella!!!

Wow...only 7 days worth of pain meds...I'm no vet but after Leland's amputation we were sent home with 2 weeks of antibiotics, tummy meds, and plenty of Gabapentin (Gaba came from Leland's local vet as the surgeon tried to send us home with Tramadol which Leland didn't do well with).  I had started tapering Leland's Gabapentin down the 3rd week post amp.

What pain meds is Bentley on?  It just seems strange that they would send you home with so little and then have you set up another apt before prescribing Bentley more.  If the pain med is a controlled narcotic perhaps they could switch him to something else.  With bad weather (snow/ice) I'd hate to see Bentley slip so soon after surgery and run the risk of injury until he gets a little more sure footed as a Tripawd.

I'll be keeping you and Bentley in my thoughts!

I found it very odd as well, they said he should only need more meds for pain if there's an infection or something else wrong. They only sent me home with 5 days worth of the anti inflamitory pills, 7 days of the pain pills (tramadol) and 10 days of antibiotics. I was just so surprised after reading other people stories because their dogs seemed to have been on meds for way longer.

I was also worried about the snow/ice, the last thing I want is for him to slip and hurt himself so we bought him some boots with nice thick souls that seem to be working.
