Hello all,

I'm new to this site and am hoping someone can give me some insight or ideas as to what to do next.  My 9.5 yr old Cane Corso suffered a traumatic injury sometime during his first 1-2 yr of life that resulted in a front leg amputation.  He came into my life nearly 2 years ago and has been doing fantastic, until this past summer.  In August, he very suddenly came up with a large swelling (softball sized) on his amputation scar line that had 2 drainage points.  He went to the vet, got an antibiotic, and we started the journey that we've been on since then.  He's been on a number of meds, had cultures done, etc.  The wounds would heal up, then open again, sometimes draining pus, sometimes blood, sometimes a mixture.  Nothing conclusive was ever diagnosed.  This went on until the end of October, when I finally took him to the University of Florida Vet Hospital for a 2nd opinion.  UF took some radiographs and determined that the shoulder blade (which had not been removed during his amputation) has been damaged and they were unable to tell if it was due to a bone infection or bone cancer.  They removed his shoulder blade 2 weeks ago.  They did a bacterial culture, biopsies of the nerves in the area, and a bone biopsy.  I have not gotten any results back, which I'm assuming means at least the bacterial culture and nerve biopsy were negative.  Anyway, he's been feeling great and his wound has been healing well.  He got his sutures out on Tuesday, and today I came home to find another ulcerated wound that looks just like the initial ones did.  He's going back to my vet tomorrow and I have a call in to UF, but I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts or has seen anything like this before.  Seems too coincidental that it's in that precise location for there not to be some sort of connection.  Any thoughts on things I should have the vet check for?  By the way, his bloodwork has all been within normal limits and he had a thyroid test done in August that was fine.

Thanks for any input!  Max and I are really feeling kind of down tonight about this situation.

Welcome! Sorry to hear about max, your future forum posts will not require moderation.

Hopefully one of our vet experts will chime in. Perhaps this new issue could be a suture reaction. Wyatt also had a mysterious bacterially infected tract of unknown origin that was cleared up with a month long dose of heavy antibiotics at Texas A&M.

Best wishes, please keep us posted.

I wonder if his culture will show MRSP (a resistant Staph infection).  If not I would also consider fungal infection.  I would call to see if they can give you the culture and biopsy results ASAP.
