I've been advocating that my dog get many zolendronate treatments.in addition to 6 chemo sessions. His left femur was heavily radiated via cyberknife for osteo sarcoma of the distal femur..  A second opinion oncology vet.. part of the vaccine study. wasn't so sure about many zoldendronate  treatments bec of it's effects on the kidneys etc??  and does it really does its job by bulking up the bone? ( she said she felt some bulking up in one dog that received zolendronate)  what is happening from side effects of zolendronate. that aren't shown via bloodwork...   thoughts??  .  thanks

Hi there 🌺

There was a Great Dane, I believe her name was Heather (?) whose dads went for cyber knife and bisphosphonates , as you are doing.

They are very knowledgeable and helpful, I was in contact with them last year for advise but sadly I cannot remember who they are to pass the contact to you...

Maybe Rene could give you their contact info ?

Hugs and cuddles 😘😘🐮💫✨🌟🌹

Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)

The Dane that Teresa is referring to, I believe, was Hazel (see: http://tripawds.....tive-care/). She did get bisphosphonates and zoledronate was included. She was treated by Dr. Ogilvy at California Veterinary Specialists in Carlsbad, CA.

If you search the forums for "zoledronate" you'll see quite a few members have discussed it in these posts:

http://tripawds.....;include=1

And here is a blog post we wrote about a clinic that used zoledronate to treat patients:

http://tripawds.....an-option/

and it included this video:

So I think what you are saying is that your oncologists are concerned that the zoledronate might be too hard on her body based on their experience with that particular treatment?

I read a vet practice.. that makes money,, saying that zolendronate can be used indefinitely,, it relieves pain,, builds bone mass and can kill cancer cells,,, quite a good job...   has anyone used zolendronate premanently after radiation and chemo?

My 15.5 year old golden/toller mix was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and a small Lung met.The cancer was so advanced that there was virtually no bone left in her leg.  We opted for amputation,  but no chemo. She did receive IV pamidronate (what was available at the time) for maybe a year?.  There were no ill effects.  She passed away at age 17 after 19 months  post-amputation.

Thanks for chiming in Carrie, every story helps others. I see you registered and posted about Spirit, welcome!

We would love to hear more about your pup at some point, she sounds like she was a real rock star. Please consider telling us more in a new topic if you'd like.
